Figure 4: Location of Grating Adjustment Screws
11) Turn the grating TILT adjusting screw until the laser beam is approximately centered in height on the pinhole of
Alignment Post 3
CAUTION: DO NOT APPLY EXCESS FORCE TO ANY OF THE ADJUSTING SCREWS.
12) Turn the adjusting screw for grating rotation until the laser beam passes through the center of the pinhole in
Alignment Post 3.
NOTE THAT YOU MAY NEED TO READJUST GRATING TILT AND ROTATION TO PRECISELY
CENTER THE LASER BEAM ON THE PINHOLE.
13) Scan the instrument to 632.8nm for the grating being adjusted. Adjust the TANGENT SCREW until the diffracted
laser beam matches the height of the pinhole in the alignment post.
NOTE THAT THE TANGENT SCREW ONLY ADJUSTS THE HEIGHT OF THE LASER BEAM AT
HIGH WAVELENGTHS. GRATING TILT AND ROTATION SHOULD ONLY BE ADJUSTED AT
ZERO ORDER.
NOTE: WHEN INSTALLING COARSE GRATINGS, FOR EXAMPLE 75G/MM, SCAN TO THE
HIGHEST DIFFRACTION ORDER THAT YOU CAN SEE, SUCH AS 6TH OR 8TH ORDER.
14) Repeat the above adjustments in steps 11-13 until the laser beam passes through the Alignment Post Pinhole at
zero order and the height of the image at high wavelengths matches the height of the pinhole.
15) Remove the Alignment Post from position 3. At this point all adjustment post should have been removed from the
SCT-320. Save the alignment posts for possible future use.
