  • Stop engine and allow to cool before removing fuel cap.
  • Always store gasoline in a container approved for flammable liquids.

KICKBACK

: Avoid kickback which can result in serious injury. Kickback is the backward, upward or sudden forward motion of the guide bar occurring when the chain near the upper tip of the guide bar contacts any object such as a log or branch, or when the wood closes in and pinches the chain in the cut. Contacting a foreign object in the wood can also result in loss of control.

  • Rotational Kickback can occur when the moving chain contacts an object at the upper tip of the guide bar. This contact can cause the chain to dig into the object, which stops the chain for an instant. The result is a lightningfast, reversereactionwhich kicks the guide bar up and back toward the operator.
  • Pinch-Kickback can occur when the wood closes in and pinches the moving chain in thecutalongthetop ofthe guidebar andthe chain is suddenly stopped. This sudden stopping of the chain results in a reversal of the chain force used to cut wood and causes the pruner to move in the opposite direction of the chain rotation. The pruner is driven straight back toward the operator.
  • Pull-In can occur when the moving chain contacts aforeignobject inthe woodin thecut along the bottom of the guide bar and the chain is suddenly stopped. This sudden stopping pulls the pruner forward and away from the operator and could easily cause the operator to lose control of the pruner.

REDUCE THE CHANCE OF KICKBACK

  • Recognize that kickback can happen. With a basic understanding of kickback, you can reduce the element of surprise which contributes to accidents.
  • Never let the moving chain contact any object at the tip of the guide bar.
  • Keep the working area free from obstructions suchas other trees, branches, rocks, stumps, etc. Eliminate or avoid any obstruction that your chain could hit while you are cutting. When cutting a branch, do not let the guide bar contact branch or other objects around it.
  • Keep your chain sharp and properly tensioned. A loose or dull chain can increase the chance of kickback occurring. Follow manufacturer's chain sharpening and maintenance instructions. Check tension at regular intervals with the engine stopped, never with the engine running. Make sure the bar clamp nut is securely tightened after tensioning the chain.
  • Begin and continue cutting at full speed. If the chainis movingat aslower speed, there is greater chance of kickback occurring.
  • Cut one branch at a time.
  • Use extreme caution when re-entering a previous cut.
  • Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of the bar (plunge cuts).
  • Watch for shifting of wood or other forces that could close a cut and pinch or fall into chain. S Use the Reduced--Kickback Guide Bar and Low--Kickback Chain specified for your unit.

MAINTAIN CONTROL

  • Keep a good, firm grip on the pruner with both hands when the engine is running and don't let go. A firm grip will help you reduce kickback and maintain control. Keep the fingers of your left hand encircling and your left thumb under the assist handle. Keep your right hand completely around the throttle handle whether your are right handed or left handed.
  • Stand with your weight evenly balanced on both feet.
  • Stand slightly to the left side of the pruner to keep your body from being in a direct line with the cutting chain.

KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES

The following features are included on your pruner to help reduce the hazard of kickback; however, such features will not totally eliminate this danger. As a pruner user, do not rely only on safety devices. You must follow all safety precautions, instructions, and maintenance in this manual to help avoid kickback and other forces which can result in serious injury.

  • Reduced--Kickback Guide Bar, designed with a small radius tip which reduces the size of the kickback danger zone on the bar tip.

It is normal for a new chain to stretch during first 15 minutes of operation. You should check your chain tension frequently. See CHAIN TENSION in the SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS section.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

Be sure to read the fuel information in the safety rules before you begin. If you do not understand the safety rules, do not attempt to fuel your unit. Call 1-800-554-6723.

FUELING ENGINE

Remove fuel cap slowly when refueling.

HELPFUL TIP
To obtain the correct oil mix ratio, pour 3.2 ounces of 2--cycle synthetic oil into one gallon of fresh gas.

This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a good quality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooled engine oil designed to be mixed at a ratio of 40:1. Poulan/WEED EATER brand synthetic oil is recommended. Mix gasoline and oil at a ratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2 fluid ounces (95 ml) of oil with 1 gallon (4 liters) of unleaded gasoline. DO NOT USE automotive oil or marine oil. These oils will cause engine damage. When mixing fuel, follow instructions printed on container. Once oil is addedto gasoline, shake container momentarily to assure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed. Always read and follow the safety rules relating to fuel before fueling your unit.

Never use straight gasoline in your unit. This will cause permanent engine damage and void the limited warranty.

FUEL REQUIREMENTS

This engine requires the use of minimum 87 octane [R+M]/2 clean gasoline.

Use of alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can cause major engine performance and durability problems.

Alternative fuels (not gasoline) such as E--15 (15% alcohol), E--20 (20% alcohol),E--85(85%alcohol)are NOTclassified as gasoline and are NOT approved for use in 2--stroke gasoline engines. Use of alternative fuels will cause problems such as: improper clutch engagements, overheating, vapor lock, power loss, lubrication deficiency, deterioration of fuel lines, gaskets and internal carburetor components, etc. Alternative fuels cause high moisture absorption into the fuel/oil mixture leading to oil and fuel separation.

BAR AND CHAIN LUBRICATION

The barand chainrequire lubrication. Thechain oiler provides continuous lubricationto thechain and guide bar. Be sure to fill the bar oil tank when you fill the fuel tank (Capacity =4.6 fl.oz.). Lack of oil will quickly ruin the bar and chain. Too little oil will cause overheating shown by smoke coming from the chain and/or discoloration of the bar. The oil output is automatically metered during operation. Always fill the bar oil tank when you fill the fuel tank.
Genuine Poulan or Poulan PRO bar and chain oil is recommended to protect your unit against excessive wear from heat and friction. Poulan or Poulan PRO oil resists high temperature thinning. If Poulan or Poulan PRO bar and chain oil is not available, use a good grade SAE 30 oil.

  • Never use waste oil for bar and chain lubrication.
  • Always stop the engine before removing the oil cap.

HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT

  • Release the throttle trigger.
  • Push and release the engine ON/STOP switch. The switch will automatically return to the ON position. Wait 5 seconds before attempting to restart unit to allow switch to reset.
    OPERATION-HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT

Make sure the chain will not make contact with any object while starting the engine. Never try to start the unit when the guide bar is in a cut. Avoid any contact with the muffler. A hot muffler can cause serious burns.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRUNER ATTACHMENT OPERATING POSITION

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRUNER ATTACHMENT OPERATING POSITION

Do not extend arms above shoulders while pruning. Do not stand beneath branch being cut.

Always wear head, eye, hearing, foot and body protection to reduce the risk of injury when operating this unit. When operating unit, clip shoulder strap onto clamp, stand as shown and check for the following:

  • Extend your left arm and hold assist handle with your left hand.
  • Hold throttle grip with your right hand with finger on throttle trigger.
  • Keep engine end below waist level.
  • Keep shoulder strap pad centered on your left shoulder and danger sign centered on your back.
  • Maintain full weight of tool on your left shoulder.

Always release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to return to idle speed when not pruning.
To stop engine:

  • Release the throttle trigger.
  • Push and release the engine ON/STOP switch.

PRUNING

Be alert for and guard against kickback. Donot allow the movingchain to contact any other branches or objects at the nose of the guide bar when pruning. Allowing such contact can result in serious injury.

IMPORTANT POINTS

  • Work slowly, keeping both hands firmly gripped on the pruner. Maintain secure footing and balance.
  • Plan cut carefully. Check direction branch will fall.
  • Watch out for springpoles. Springpoles are small size limbs which can catch the chain and whip toward you or pull you off balance. Use extreme caution when cutting small size limbs or slender material.
  • Watch out for branches immediately behind the branch being pruned. If the chain hits the rear branch, damage to the unit may occur.
  • Be alert for springback. Watch out for branches that are bent or under pressure. Avoid being struck by the branch or the pruner when the tension in the wood fibers is released.
  • Keep a clear work area. Frequently clear branches out of the way to avoid tripping over them.
  • Long branches should be removed in several pieces.

PRUNING TECHNIQUE

When ready to cut, accelerate to full throttle and apply a light cutting pressure. DO NOT use back and forth sawing action.

PRUNING TECHNIQUE-Example 1

  1. Make the first cut 6 inches (15 cm) from the tree trunk on the bottom of the limb. Use top of guide bar to make this cut. Cut 1/3 through the diameter of the limb.

NOTE:
When making the second and third cuts, rest the foot of the pruner against the tree limb that is being cut to prevent whipping of the branch.

PRUNING TECHNIQUE-Example 2

  1. Next, move 2 -- 4 inches (5 -- 10 cm) farther out on the limb and make a second cut all the way through the limb.
  2. Then, makea finalcut leavinga 1 -- 2inch (2.5 -- 5 cm) collar from the trunk of the tree to avoid damage to the tree.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR TRIMMER ATTACHMENT

OPERATING POSITION

TRIMMER ATTACHMENT OPERATING POSITION

Always wear eyeprotection. Never lean over the trimmer head. Rocks ordebris canricochet or be throwninto eyes and face and cause blindness or other serious injury. Do not run the engine at a higher speed than necessary. The cutting line will cut efficiently whenthe engineis runat less than fullthrottle. At lower speeds, there is less engine noise and vibration. The cutting line will last longer and will be less likely to "weld" onto the spool. Always release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to return to idle speed when not cutting.

To stop engine:

  • Release the throttle trigger.
  • Push and release the engine ON/STOP switch.

TRIMMER LINE ADVANCE

Thetrimmer line willadvance approximately 2 inches (5 cm) each time the bottom of the trimmer head is tapped on the ground with the engine running at full throttle. The most efficient line length is the maximum length allowed by the line limiter. Always keep the shield in place when the tool is being operated.

To advance line:

  • Operate the engine at full throttle.
  • Hold the trimmer head parallelto andabove the grassy area.
  • Tap the bottom of the trimmer head lightly on the ground one time. Approximately 2 inches (5 cm) of line will be advanced with each tap. Always tap the trimmer head on a grassy area. Tapping on surfaces such as concrete or asphalt can cause excessive wear to the trimmer head.

If the line is worn down to 2 inches (5 cm) or less, more than one tap will be required to obtain the most efficient line length.

Use only 0.080" (2 mm) diameter line. Other sizes of line will not advance properly and can cause serious injury. Do not use other materials such as wire, string, rope, etc. Wire can break off during cutting and become a dangerous missile that can cause serious injury.

CUTTING METHODS

Use minimum speed and do not crowdthe linewhen cuttingaround hard objects (rock, gravel, fence posts, etc.), whichcandamage thetrimmer head, become entangled in the line, or be thrown causing a serious hazard.

  • The tip of the line does the cutting. You will achieve the best performance and minimum line wear by not crowding the line into the cutting area. The right and wrong ways are shown below.
    TRIMMER ATTACHMENT CUTTING METHODS
  • The line will easily remove grass and weeds fromaround walls, fences, trees and flower beds, but it also can cut the tender bark of trees or shrubs and scar fences.
  • For trimming or scalping, use less than full throttle to increaseline lifeand decreasehead wear, especially: S During light duty cutting.
  • Near objects around which the line can wrap such as small posts, trees or fence wire.
  • For mowing or sweeping, use full throttle for a good clean job.

TRIMMING -- Hold the bottom of the trimmer head about 3 inches (8 cm) above the ground and at an angle. Allow only the tip of the line to make contact. Do not force trimmer line into work area.
CUTTING METHODS-TRIMMING

SCALPING -- The scalping technique removes unwanted vegetation down to the ground. Hold the bottom of the trimmer head about 3 inches (8 cm) above the ground and atanangle. Allow thetipofthe lineto strikethe ground around trees, posts, monuments, etc. This technique increases line wear.
CUTTING METHODS-SCALPING

MOWING -- Your trimmer is ideal for mowing in places conventional lawn mowers cannot reach. In the mowing position, keep the line parallel to the ground. Avoid pressing the head into the ground as this can scalp the ground and damage the tool.
CUTTING METHODS-MOWING

SWEEPING -- The fanning action of the rotating line can be used for a quick and easy clean up. Keep the line parallel to and above the surfaces being swept and move the tool from side to side.

  • After each use, inspect complete unit for loose or damaged parts. Clean the unit and labels using a damp cloth with a mild detergent.
  • Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.

CHECK CHAIN TENSION

Wear protective gloves when handling chain. The chain is sharp and can cut you even when it is not moving. Make chain adjustments with lower end supported. Chain tension is very important. Chains stretchduringuse. This is especially trueduring the first few times youuse your pruner. Always check chain tension each time you use and refuel your unit.

  1. Use the screwdriver end of the chain adjustment tool (bar tool) to move chain around guide bar to ensure kinks do not exist. The chain should rotate freely.
    MAINTENANCE-CHECK CHAIN TENSION - Step 1
  2. Loosen bar clamp nut until it is finger tight against the bar clamp.
    MAINTENANCE-CHECK CHAIN TENSION - Step 2
  3. Turn adjusting screw clockwise until chain solidly contacts bottomof guidebar rail. Then, turn adjusting screw an additional 1/4 turn.
    MAINTENANCE-CHECK CHAIN TENSION - Step 3
  4. Using bar tool, roll chain around guide bar to ensure all links are in bar groove.
  5. Lift up tip of guide bar to check for sag. Release tip of guide bar, then turn adjustingscrew1/4 turnclockwise. Repeatuntil sag does not exist.
  6. While lifting tip of guide bar, tighten bar clamp nut securely with the bar tool.
MAINTENANCE - CHECK CHAIN TENSION - Step 4
  7. Use the screwdriver end of the bar tool to move chain around guide bar.
  8. If chain does not rotate, it is too tight. Slightly loosen bar clamp nut and loosen chain by turning the adjusting screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Retighten bar clamp nut.
  9. If chain is too loose, it will sag below the guide bar and needs to be tightened following above procedure.

DO NOT operate the pruner if the chain is loose. If the pruner is operated with a loose chain, the chain could jump off the guide bar and result in serious injury.

CHECK CHAIN SHARPNESS

A sharp chain makes wood chips. A dullchain makes a sawdust powder and cuts slowly. See CHAIN SHARPENING in the SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS section.

CLEAN AIR FILTER

A dirty air filter decreases engine performance and increases fuel consumption and harmful emissions. Always clean after every 5 hours of operation.

  1. Clean the cover and the area around it to keep dirt from falling into the carburetor chamber when the cover is removed.
  2. Loosen knob by turning counterclockwise. Remove air filter cover and air filter.
    NOTE:
To avoid creating a fire hazard or producing harmful evaporative emissions, do not clean filter in gasoline or other flammable solvent.
  3. Wash the filter in soap and water.
  4. Allow filter to dry.
  5. Replace parts.
    MAINTENANCE - CLEAN AIR FILTER

BAR MAINTENANCE

If your pruner cuts to one side, has to be forced through the cut, or been runwith animproper amount of bar lubrication it may be necessary to service your bar. Aworn bar will damage your chain and make cutting difficult. After each use, clean all sawdust from the guide bar and sprocket hole.

To maintain guide bar:

  • Disconnect spark plug.
  • Loosen and remove bar clamp nut and chain brake. Remove bar and chain from pruner.
  • Clean the oil holes and bar groove after each 5 hours of operation.
To maintain guide bar - Step 1
  • Burring of guide bar rails is a normal process of rail wear. Remove these burrs with a flat file.
  • When rail top is uneven, use a flat file to restore square edges and sides.
To maintain guide bar - Step 2

Replace guide bar when the groove is worn, the guide bar is bent or cracked, or when excess heatingorburringoftherails occurs. If replacement is necessary, use only the guide bar specified for your pruner in the repair parts list.

LUBRICATION

MAINTENANCE-LUBRICATION

  • See GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OIL under the OPERATION section.

MUFFLER AND SPARK ARRESTING SCREEN

The muffler on this product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer.

As your unit is used, carbon deposits build up on the muffler and spark arresting screen. For normal homeowner use, however, the muffler and spark arresting screen will not require any service. After 50 hours of use, we recommend that your muffler be serviced or replaced by your authorized service dealer.

REPLACE SPARK PLUG

Replace the spark plug each year to ensure the engine starts easier and runs better. Inspect spark plug every 25 hours of usage. Cleanand/orreplaceas necessary. Setspark plug gap at 0.025 inch (0.6 mm). Ignition timing is fixed and nonadjustable.

SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS

Disconnect the spark plug before performing maintenance, service, or adjustments except for carburetor adjustments.

CHAIN SHARPENING

Improper chain sharpening techniques and/or depth gauge maintenance will increase the chance of kickback which can result in serious injury.

Wear protective gloves when handling chain. The chain is sharp and can cut you even when it is not moving.

Conditions which indicate the need for chain sharpening:

  • Reduction in size of wood chips. The size of the wood chip will decrease as the chain gets duller until it becomes more like a powder than a chip. Note that dead or rotted wood will not produce a good chip.
  • Saw cuts to one side or at an angle.
  • Saw has to be forced through the cut.

Tools required:

  • 3/16 inch (4,5 mm) diameter round file and file holder
  • Flat file
  • Depth gauge tool

TO SHARPEN CHAIN:

  1. Disconnect spark plug.
  2. Check chain for proper tension. Adjust chain tension if necessary. See CHECK CHAIN TENSION section.
  3. Sharpen cutters.
  • To sharpen the cutters, position the file holder level (90˚) so that it rests on the top edges of the cutter and depth gauge.
NOTE: The chain has both left and right hand cutters.
TO SHARPEN CHAIN - Step 1
  • Align the 30˚ file holder marks parallel with the bar and to the center of the chain.
TO SHARPEN CHAIN - Step 2
  • Sharpencutters ononesideof thechain first. File from theinside ofeach cutter to the outside. Then, turn the chain saw around and repeat the process for the other side of the chain.
  • File on the forward stroke only. Use 2 or 3 strokes per cutting edge.
  • Keep all cutters the same lengthwhen filing.
  • File enough to remove any damage to cutting edges (side plate and top plate of cutter).
TO SHARPEN CHAIN - Step 3
  • File chain to meet the specifications as shown.
TO SHARPEN CHAIN - Step 4 TO SHARPEN CHAIN - Step 5
TO SHARPEN CHAIN - Step 6

Maintain the proper hook angleaccordingtothe manufacturer's specifications for the chain you are using. Improper hook angle will increase the chance of kickback which can result in serious injury.

  1. Check and lower depth gauges.
TO SHARPEN CHAIN - Step 7
  • Place gauge tool on cutter.
  • If the depth gauge is higher than the depth gauge tool, file it level to the top of the depth gauge tool.
  • Maintainroundedfrontcorner ofdepth gauge with a flat file.
    NOTE:
The very top of the depth gauge should be flat with the front half rounded off with a flat file.

If you require further assistance or are unsure about performing this procedure, contact your authorized service dealer or call our customer assistance help line at 1--800--554--6723.

CHAIN REPLACEMENT

Wear protective gloves when handling chain. The chain is sharp and can cut you even when it is not moving.
