WEAR
Probable Cause
Check LOW FIRST STAGE
PRESSURE symptoms.
Piston ring wear.
Incorrect grade of lubricant.
Insufficient water flow, reduced
cooling efficiency.
Water pump faulty or drive slipping.
Insufficient water flow.
Incorrect siting.
Radiator blocked.
Oil filter blocked
Worn bearings.
Bearing end plate gasket distorted
partially blocking suction port.
Loose pipe couplings in crankcase.
Loose big end bearing bolts or
incorrectly fitted big end bearings.
Overload set too low.
Insufficient electrical supply causing
low voltage.
Star/Delta timer.
Low oil pressure switch operating.
Loose components.
Gas leaks (usually hissing or
whistling).
Worn bearings, cylinders and rings
(usually heavy knocking, rumbling or
slapping).
Piston knocking
Compressor set-up or pipework
system vibration.
Incorrect grade of lubricant.
Piston rings/cylinder worn or
damaged.
Excessive unloaded running.
Faulty intake pipeline filter.
Incorrect lubricant.

Recommendation(s)
Check components, renew rings and
liners on 1st and 2nd stages as
necessary. Check blowby on crankcase
breather pipe.
Drain, clean and refill with correct
lubricant. Check condition of valves and
air passageways.
Examine condition of water circuit,
remove sludge or scale.
Renew pump, re-adjust drive, add
inhibitor.
Resite to give correct cooling airflow.
Clean and blow out.
Fit new oil filter element.
Check bearing clearances.
Examine gasket, replace if necessary.
Trace and rectify.
Examine and retighten to correct torque.
Consult competent electrician.
Consult competent electrician.
Full speed should be obtained by star
before switching to delta. Extend timer
period to suit.
Consult fault symptom 'LOW OIL
PRESSURE' or reset star/delta timer.
Trace and rectify.
Trace, stop compressor, depressurise,
renew seal.
Check clearances and renew as
necessary.
Check top dead centre clearance.
Check compressor pipework system is
firmly secured, check clearances and
alignment of couplings and tension of
vee belts.
Change to recommended lubricant.
Check for wear and renew as necessary.
When renewing, break glaze on cylinder
walls.
Reduce unloaded running periods.
Check to ensure filter element is fitted
and ensure it fits well.
Change to recommended lubricant.
