NOTE: Verify that vent hole of oil fill/vent plug is
facing outside.

Integrated 2:1 Gear Reduction Unit

1. See Figure 135. Use your index finger to manually
rotate the gear cover bearing (A) in both directions.
Verify that bearing rotates freely without roughness,
sticking, or unusual noise.
2. If bearing and/or oil seal (B) replacement is required,
proceed as follows:
A. Remove and discard old bearing and oil seal.
B. Feel bearing journal for smoothness. Use fine
steel wool or crocus cloth to remove any burrs or
minor imperfections.
C. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to bearing
journal and outside diameter of new bearing.
D. With the manufacturer's identification facing in,
press on outer race of bearing until contact is
made with counterbore.
E. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to oil seal
bore and outside diameter of new oil seal.

F. With the open (lip garter spring) side facing in,
press on outside edge of oil seal until flush with
gear cover.
3. Verify that PTO bearing oil seal is NOT installed in
crankcase cover.
4. Install spacer (C) onto crankshaft.
5. Install chain (D) on sprocket (E) and output shaft (F).
6. Slide sprocket over crankshaft while fitting output
shaft into crankcase cover bore.
7. Start hex flange screw (G) with flat washer (H)
into crankshaft. Tighten screw to 255-315 lb-in
(28.8-35.6 N-m).
8. Install two locating pins (I) at the 6 o'clock and 12
o'clock positions on the crankcase cover flange.
9. Place new gear cover gasket (J) onto locating pins.
10. Start five screws (K) to fasten gear cover (L) to
crankcase cover. Alternately tighten screws to 75-95
lb-in (8.5-10.7 N-m) using the sequence shown in
inset of Figure 135.
