12. Adjust valve clearance. See SECTION 2 -
MAINTENANCE, CHECK/ADJUST VALVE
CLEARANCE, steps 6-9.
13. Verify that mating surfaces of cylinder head and
valve cover are clean and dry. Any dust or dirt left on
mating surfaces can cause leaks.
14. Install new valve cover gasket onto valve cover.
15. Start four hex flange screws to fasten valve cover to
cylinder head. Alternately tighten screws to 70-90
lb-in (7.9-10.2 N-m) using the sequence shown in
Figure 106.

16. Install spark plug into cylinder head and finger
tighten until snug. Tighten spark plug to 140-200
lb-in (15.8-22.6 N-m) using the 5/8 inch Spark Plug
Wrench (Part No. 19576S).
NOTE: Do not install spark plug wire onto spark plug
terminal at this time.

17. See Figure 107. Install two hex flange screws (A)
to fasten cylinder heat shield (B) to cylinder head.
Tighten screws to 40-60 lb-in (4.5-6.8 N-m).
NOTE: Install the shorter screw (M6X8) to cylinder
heat shield on same side as the engine oil drain plug.
NOTE: A third hex flange screw to engine base also
captures the blower housing, so do not install at this
time.
18. Install hex flange screw (C) to fasten heat shield
(D) to cylinder head. Tighten screw to 40-60 lb-in
(4.5-6.8 N-m).
NOTE: A second hex flange screw also captures the
blower housing, while a third screw also captures the
control bracket, so do not install at this time.
