2. Recommended Locations

Locatethefirstalarmintheimmediateareaofthebedrooms.
Trytomonitortheexitpath,asthebedroomsareusually
farthestfromtheexit.Ifmorethanonesleepingareaexists,
locateadditionalalarmsineachsleepingarea(Image1A).
Locateadditionalalarmstomonitoranystairwayasstairwaysact
likechimneysforsmokeandheat.
Locateatleastonealarmoneveryfloorlevel(Image1B).
LocateanalarmineverySleepingRoom.
Locateanalarmineveryroomwhereelectricalappliancesare
operated(i.e.portableheatersorhumidifiers).
Locateanalarmineveryroomwheresomeonesleepswiththe
doorclosed.Thecloseddoormaypreventanalarmnotlocated
inthatroomfromwakingthesleeper.
Smoke,heat,andcombustionproductsrisetotheceilingand
spreadhorizontally.Mountingthesmokealarmontheceilingin
thecenteroftheroomplacesitclosesttoallpointsintheroom.
Ceilingmountingispreferredinordinaryresidentialconstruction.
Whenmountinganalarmontheceiling,locateitataminimum
of10cm(4")fromthesidewall(Image2A).
Whenmountingthealarmonthewall,useaninsidewallwith
thetopedgeofthealarmataminimumof10cm(4")anda
maximumof30.5cm(12")belowtheceiling(Image2A).
Putsmokealarmsatbothendsofabedroomhallwayorlarge
roomifthehallwayorroomismorethan9.1m(30')long.
Formobilehomeinstallation,selectlocationscarefullytoavoid
thermalbarriersthatmayformattheceiling.Formoredetails,

Installsmokealarmsonsloped,peakedorcathedralceilings
followingthemountingguidelinesoutlinedinimage2Band2C.
Smokealarmsinroomswithceilingslopesgreaterthan0.3min
2.4m(1footin8feet)horizontallyshallbelocatedonthehigh
sideoftheroom(Image2Band2C).
