Additional Recommendations

TheNationalFireProtectionAssociation'sStandard72providesthe
followinginformation:
SmokeDetection.Whererequiredbyapplicablelaws,codes,orstandards
forthespecifiedoccupancy,approvedsingle-andmultiple-stationsmoke
alarmsshallbeinstalledasfollows:(1)Inallsleepingrooms.(2)Outside
ofeachseparatesleepingarea,inimmediatevicinityofthesleeping
rooms.(3)Oneachlevelofthedwellingunit,includingbasements
Exception:Inexistingone-andtwo-familydwellingunits,approved
smokealarmspoweredbybatteriesarepermitted.
SmokeDetection-AreMoreSmokeAlarmsDesirable?
Requirednumberofsmokealarms(asshowninImage1AandImage
1B):Therequirednumberofsmokealarmsmightnotprovidereliable
earlywarningprotectionforthoseareasseparatedbyadoorfromthe
areasprotectedbytherequiredsmokealarms.Forthisreason,itis
recommendedthatthehouseholderconsidertheuseofadditionalsmoke
alarmsforthoseareasforincreasedprotection.
Theadditionalareasincludethebasement,bedrooms,diningroom,
furnaceroom,utilityroom,andhallwaysnotprotectedbytherequired
smokealarms.Theinstallationofthesmokealarmsinthekitchen,attic
(finishedorunfinished),orgarageisnormallynotrecommended,as
theselocationsoccasionallyexperienceconditionsthatcanresultin
improperoperation.
AlarmsshouldbeinstalledinaccordancewiththeNationalFireProtection
Association'sStandard72(NFPA,BatterymarchPark,Quincy,MA02269).
Notifyyourlocalfiredepartmentandinsurancecompanyofyoursmoke
alarminstallation.
