PRESS RESET (CLICKS)
Check for shorted (grounded) element: Turn
power off. Disconnect power wires from each
heating element. Set meter to highest resistance
setting. Check resistance between each screw
terminal to ground (metal tank or thermostat
bracket).
Meter will read OL if element is not shorted/
grounded. Lower resistance means element is
shorted/grounded—replace element. If both
elements are good, thermostat contacts probably
welded shut causing element to be on all the
time. Since the lower thermostat does most of the
work, lower thermostat is the most likely to fail
before upper thermostat. Replace thermostat.
