5.2.1.Functionalranges
TheIntegralActiveSteeringfurtherimprovesdrivingdynamicsthroughadditionalcontrolinterventions
atthefrontandrearaxle.Thevehiclespeed,lateralaccelerationandyawratecalculatedfrommea-
suredvariablesarecomparedwithaset-pointvalue.Thedifferencebetweentheset-pointandactual
valueisconvertedintoareferenceyawmoment.Theresultingcontrolinterventionsaredistributedin
anoptimumratiobetweentheactivesteeringALorrearaxleslipanglecontrol(HSR).
TheEPSissupplementedbyaplanetarygearboxwithoverridefunctioninthesteeringgearinputand
anactivesteeringservomotor.Theactivesteeringservomotorcanmodifythesteeringanglespecified
bythedriverwithreferencetodefaultvaluesfromtheactivesteeringcontrolunit.
Todothis,theactivesteeringcontrolunitevaluatesthesensorsignals,whichinclude:

Steeringangle
•
Wheelspeed
•
Yawrate
•
Lateralacceleration.
Intheeventthatthesystemfails,theactivesteeringservomotorisbrakedanddisabledbyalock.The
fullrangeofvehiclemaneuverabilityisretainedasapermanentmechanicalconnectionbetweenthe
steeringwheelandthefrontwheelsexists.
Lowspeedrange
Thevariablesteeringratiooftheactivesteeringcomponentreducesthesteeringeffortrequiredto
movethefrontwheelsfromlocktolocktoroughlytwosteeringwheelturns.
Atlowspeedrangesofuptoroughly60km/h,thevariablesteeringratioofthefrontaxleiscoupled
withanopposingsteeringangleattherearaxle.Thisincreasesthemaneuverabilityofthevehicle.
Highspeedrange
Asthedrivingspeedincreases,thedegreeofsteeringangleamplificationbytheActiveSteeringcom-
ponentisreducedandthesteering-gearratiobecomeslessdirect.
Atthesametime,thesteeringstrategyadoptedbytheIntegratedActiveSteeringchanges.Whileat
lowspeedstherearwheelsaresteeredinanopposingdirectiontothefrontaxle,athigherspeedsthe
steeringangleisinthesamedirection.
Asaresulttheinstantaneouscenterofrotationshiftsbackwards.Thiscorrespondstoavehiclewitha
longerwheelbasewhichenhancesitsdirectionalstability.Theradiusofthecurvebecomeslonger.
Activesteeringaddsafurtherangletothewheelsatthefrontaxlewhichmeansthatthecurveradius
andrequiredsteeringangleremainattheaccustomedlevel.
