Thehighstrengthmulti-phasesteelsandhighstrengthhotformedsteelsensurelowweightwhile providingmaximumstrengthforthepassengersafetycellthuscontributingtothepassivesafetytoa highdegree. Aninnovativeadvancementintheformofpassivecorrosionprotectionisusedonthehotformed steels.Untilnowsuitablehotformedsheetmetalmaterialswithcathodiccorrosionprotectionwere notavailableonthemarket.Developmentofpresshardeningtechnologyhasprovidedamass productionprocessforproductionofgalvanized,hotformedcomponents. Withthisprocessgalvanizedsheetmetalisfirstcoldformedandthenheatedtoatemperatureof approx.900°C.Immediatelythereafterthecomponentsarecooleddowntoapprox.70°Cwithin secondsdirectlyinthewatercooledpressingtools,hardeningthecomponents.Thisprocess producescomponentswithaminimumyieldstrengthsignificantlygreaterthan1000MPa. Componentsproducedinthismannercanbeusedinwetareaswithoutanycorrosiontothebase material.Additionalcorrosionprotectionmeasuresareeliminatedforsuchsteel. 2.1.2.Materials Modernautomotivebodiesmustsatisfymanyrequirements.Inspiteofminimumouterdimensions theymustprovidethelargestpossibleinteriorspace.Passengersmustbeprotectedoptimallyagainst injuryintheeventofanaccident.Thetorquegeneratedbyallassembliessuchastheengineand transmissionissupportedbythebody.Moreoverthebodymustprovidehighstaticand,aboveall, dynamicrigiditytoguaranteetheexceptionaldrivingcharacteristicstypicalforBMW. Last,butnotleast,thesupportingstructureofthevehiclemusthavehighfatiguestrengthandbe capableofrepairatreasonableexpenseintheeventofanaccident. Tosatisfyalloftheserequirementsoptimally,BMWpursuesastrategyofproducingeverycomponent usingthematerialbestsuitedforthespecificfunction. Thetwoterms,aluminumandsteel,areonlythegenerictermsforavarietyofalloyswithhighly differingproperties.
