Glossary
MS-ADPCM Adaptive Differential
Pulse Code Modulation, a data
compression technique from
Microsoft.
A-law A method of data compression
that enables the sampling of sound at
a resolution of 16 bits, but that
generates the same quantity of data as
an 8-bit sampling rate.
AVI files Audio-Video Interleaved
file format used with Microsoft's
Video for Windows.
Basic MIDI format Allows MIDI
channels 13 to 16 of the General MIDI
operation mode to be used when
notes are played through MIDI.
Compression A technique for
compacting data for more efficient
storage or transmission. The sound
quality of compressed audio data is
greatly reduced. See the A-law and
-law entries.
DAT Digital Audio Tape.
Digital audio Digitally recorded
sound such as speech and sound
effects.
DMA channel Direct Memory
Access channel. Speeds up I/O to and
from the system's memory by
avoiding CPU processing. However,
the system limits the number of
boards that can use DMA.
Extended MIDI format Allows
MIDI channels 1 to 10 of the General
MIDI operation mode to be used when
notes are played through MIDI.
FM synthesis A technique for
synthesizing sound that uses a
combination of modulated sine waves
to produce different wave forms.
General MIDI format A standard
set of 128 sounds. Allows 16 channels
to be used when notes are played
through MIDI.
IRQ line The Interrupt Request line
is the signal line your board uses to
notify your computer's central
processor that it wants to send or
receive data for processing.
MID files Standard file format used
to store MIDI sequence information.
MIDI Musical Instrument Digital
Interface. An international
hardware/software standard that
specifies the cable and hardware
interface that allows several devices,
instruments, and computers to
interchange music codes and events.
MIDI mapper A Windows utility
that lets you edit MIDI key maps,
patch maps, and channel mappings.
Mixing Combining sounds from
several sources.
MPU-401 MIDI interface hardware
standard developed by the Roland Co.
