    Attaching the Tower Stand to the Computer CAUTION: To prevent the overheating of internal components when the computer is used in a desktop configuration, ensure that at least 4 inches (10.2 cm) of space on all sides of the computer remains clear and free of obstruction.

  • Page 17 Hardware Upgrades To open the computer cover using the FailSafe Key: 1. Turn off the computer and any external devices. 2. Use the FailSafe Key to remove the Smart Cover Lock. Removing the Smart Cover Lock Screws To reattach the Smart Cover Lock, secure the lock in place with the tamper-proof screws using the FailSafe Key.

    Hardware Upgrades Removing the Computer Access Panel and Front Bezel To remove the computer access panel: 1. If you have locked the Smart Cover Lock, use Computer Setup to unlock the lock. 2. Turn off the computer properly through the operating system, then turn off any external devices.
  • Page 19 Lay the computer on its side (with the computer access panel facing up) before removing the computer access panel and installing hardware. 5. Locate the cover latch. Pull up and hold the latch access panel. 6. Slide the computer access panel back access panel up and off the chassis.

To re-install the front bezel, insert the two bezel bottom tabs, then rotate the front bezel forward to snap the three tabs on the top of the bezel in place.

    Cable Routing CAUTION: The drive data and power cables must be kept clear of the power supply and the power supply fan to avoid damage or restrict air flow. Follow these guidelines when routing the cables in the computer: 1. Route the optical drive audio cable down, alongside of the drive cage to the floor of the chassis.

    Hardware Upgrades 5. Keep the top of the power supply and its fan access area Keep all cables away from the top of the power supply to prevent pinching or cutting. Also, keep cables away from the fan blade area to prevent them from interfering with the fan rotation or reducing the air flow.

    DDR-SDRAM DIMMs For proper system operation, the DIMMs must be industry-standard 184-pin 2.5 volt DDR-SDRAM DIMMs with appropriate MHz-compliant CAS Latency: unbuffered PC 2100 266-MHz compliant CAS Latency 2 or 2.5 (CL =2 or CL =2.5) unbuffered PC 2700 333-MHz compliant CAS Latency 2.5 (CL = 2.5) The DDR-SDRAM DIMMs must also contain the mandatory Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) Serial Presence Detect (SPD) information.

    Hardware Upgrades Refer to the Computer Setup (F10) Utility Guide for information on how to determine the processor bus frequency of a specific computer. Removing or Installing DDR-SDRAM CAUTION: The memory module sockets have gold metal contacts. When upgrading the memory, it is important to use memory modules with gold metal contacts to prevent corrosion and/or oxidation resulting from having incompatible metals in contact with each other.
  • Page 25 5. Locate the memory module sockets DIMM Socket Locations WARNING: To reduce risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the internal system components to cool before touching. Removing a DDR-SDRAM DIMM 1. Press out on both latches of the DIMM socket at the same time. This releases the module and partially pushes it out of the socket.
  • Page 26 Hardware Upgrades Installing a DDR-SDRAM DIMM If only one memory module is used in the system, it must be installed in the same socket that held the preinstalled memory module. If you are adding a second DIMM or replacing a single smaller DIMM with two larger DIMMs, both DIMMs should be of the same capacity in order to achieve a higher performing, dual-channel mode.

    3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for any additional modules to be installed. 4. Replace the front bezel and computer access panel. 5. If you normally lock the Smart Cover Lock, use Computer Setup to relock the lock and enable the Smart Cover Sensor. The computer automatically recognizes the additional memory the next time you turn on the computer.
  • Page 28 Hardware Upgrades 5. Slide the slot cover lock located on the rear of the computer away from the expansion card brackets and expansion slot covers secured by the lock. Releasing the Slot Cover Lock 6. Locate the vacant expansion slot on the system board and remove the corresponding slot cover.
  • Page 29 7. If removing an expansion card from a standard expansion socket: a. Hold the card at each end, and carefully rock it back and forth until the connectors pull free from the socket. b. Pull the expansion card straight up from the socket 1 then away from the inside of the chassis 23 to maneuver the card out of the computer.
  • Page 30 Hardware Upgrades 10. If removing an AGP card from an AGP expansion socket with a retention mechanism: a. Pull the retention arm away from the socket. b. Carefully rock the card back and forth until the connectors pull free from the socket.

    Install guide screws to ensure the drive will line up correctly in the drive cage and lock in place. HP has provided extra guide screws (four 6-32 standard screws and four M2 metric screws), installed in the front of the chassis, behind the bezel.

    Removing an Optical Drive or Diskette Drive CAUTION: All removable media should be taken out of the drives before removing the drive from the computer. An optical drive is a CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD-ROM drive. 1. If you have locked the Smart Cover Lock, use Computer Setup to unlock the lock.

    Installing an Optional Optical Drive To install an optional optical drive: 1. Remove the optical drive if present. 2. Install two guide screws in the lower holes on each side of the drive. CAUTION: Use only 3/16-inch or 5-mm long screws as guide screws. Longer screws can damage the internal components of the drive.

    Using the Cable-Select Feature with Ultra ATA Devices Optional drives and optional drive cables are available from HP in kits. The configuration of the drive employs a cable-select feature that identifies the drive as device 0 (primary drive) or device 1 (secondary drive).
