CD/DVD Drive

For details on operating the CD/DVD drive, the disc types supported by this computer, and how to
view DVDs, refer to

Locations for Using the Drive

Do not expose the drive to excessive smoke that
may leave a residue, e.g., oil smoke, or tobacco
smoke.
Doing so can shorten the life of the drive lens.

While the drive is being accessed

Do not open the disc cover or
move the computer while the
drive is being accessed.
Doing so could cause the disc to
shift position and this may damage
the disc, or cause the drive to
malfunction.
Do not subject the computer
while in the midst of writing or
rewriting, as this may result in a
writing failure.
Do not shock the computer by
removing or inserting cables and
cards, etc.
This may result in a read or write
malfunction.
After running an application
involving access to a disc, close
the application before opening
the disc cover.
Do not apply excessive force to
the disc cover.
Do not operate the drive power/
open switch.
Connect the AC adaptor if writing operation takes a
long time. If the remaining battery power becomes
low and the power is not supplied, writing operation
may not be completed.

Drive Operation Sounds

In the following cases, the CD/DVD drive makes a
motor sound.
Immediately after turning on the power of the CD/
DVD drive (buzzing or whirring sound)
Immediately after turning on the computer while
[Optical Drive Power] is set to [On] in the Setup
Utility (buzzing or whirring sound)
While a CD/DVD is playing back (low rotating
sound at a regular intervals)
This is the sound of the CD/DVD drive motor
operating, and is not a malfunction.
Operation of the Drive Power/
Open Switch
Immediately after the computer is turned on, if the
drive power/open switch of the CD/DVD drive is
operated while Windows is starting up, the CD/
DVD drive may not be recognized.
If this happens, perform [Scan for hardware
changes] with the following procedure.
1 Click
(Start) - [Computer].
2 Click [System properties] - [Device Manager].
3 If [User Account Control] is displayed, click
[Yes].
A standard user needs to enter an
administrator password.
4 Click the computer name at [Device Manager]
and [Action] - [Scan for hardware changes].
Do not start PowerDVD while the CD/DVD drive
is being accessed immediately after the drive
power/open switch is closed.
When the CD/DVD Drive Power
Is Turned Off
When the drive power is turned off by sliding
the drive power/open switch, the message "The
'MATSHITA DVDXXXXXXXXX' device can now be
safely removed from ..." will appear, but the CD/DVD
drive is an internal device, so it cannot be removed.
