Daisy-Chain Addressing

HARDWARE INSTALLATION

Prior to installing in a daisy-chain, the address of each FTAP-x-2X8 Fiber Tap must be set either individually
or as a group — as described in the Fluke Networks MANAgents software guide. Also please note that
the daisy-chaining capability is limited to four 2x8 switches, providing access up to 32 fiber links.
IMPORTANT
Before installing the FTAP-x-2X8 Fiber Tap, you must measure the network's power level at the point where the
FTAP-x-2X8 Fiber Tap will be inserted. In order to minimize the bit error rate of the analysis system, the input
power to the FTAP-x-2X8 Fiber Tap from both the transmit and receive side of each segment must be within
the ranges recommended in power level table found in the Specifications section of this hardware guide.
By optimizing the performance of the analyzer path, the analyzer will be able to perform as it was designed to
detect and resolve network errors.
The explanation below will focus on the FTAP-x-2X8 Fiber Tap configuration shown in Figure 15.
To make interconnection between multiple FTAP-x-2X8 and individual network fiber links, follow
the steps below:
1. Connect one of the network appliance adapter card Port 1 and Port 2 Rx connectors respectively
to the TAP A1 and A2 ports using DRL408-2m SC to SC multi-mode fiber cables.
2. Connect the other network appliance adapter card Port 1 and Port 2 Rx connectors to the
TAP B1 and B2 ports, respectively, using DRL408-2m SC to SC multi-mode fiber cables.
3. Connect the DAISY A1, A2, B1 and B2 ports of the first switch respectively to the TAP A1,
A2, B1 and B2 ports of the second switch, using DRL408-2m SC to SC multi-mode fiber cables.
Any subsequent daisy-chained switches respectively have their DAISY A1, A2, B1 and B2 ports
connected to the TAP A1, A2, B1 and B2 ports of the next switch, using DRL408-2m multi-mode
fiber cables.
4. Connect the DRL460-6-6 control Y-cable DB9 male lead (labeled A) to the COM 1 port of one
network appliance. For single network appliance installations, the DB9 male lead (labeled B)
has been factory tie-wrapped into a two-inch coil approximately eight inches from the common
connector, so it can be easily stored above, below or hang behind the Fluke Networks switch.
Remove the DB9 male lead (labeled B) tie-wrap to make the entire lead length available for
installation. Connect the DRL460-6-6 control Y-cable DB9 male lead (labeled B) to the COM 1
port of the other network appliance.
5. Connect network fiber cables to the desired FTAP-x-2X8 Fiber Tap CHANNEL port.
6. Connect the power supply miniature 4-pin male quick lock connector into the POWER port of
the FTAP-x-2X8 Fiber Tap and then plug the power supply into the external power source wall
receptacle. The message Loading . . . OS Version x.xx illuminates the graphic display,
indicating power is on. The FTAP-x-2X8 Fiber Tap model number and switch status will scroll on
the display. After the daisy-chain hardware installation is complete, the switch control software
must be configured or reconfigured. Refer to the Fluke Networks MANAgents software guide.
