1. To select the FM operating
mode, press the [ AM/FM ]
button several times, until
the "
" icon appears in
the display, .

The operating mode is
selected using the
[ MODE ] button,
and then pressing the
[ A ] or [ B ] button
(located to the upper
left of the Main Tun-
ing Dial knob), to
choose VFO-A or VFO-B, to which the selection is
applied. Usually, the [ A ] button glows red, signify-
ing VFO-A is being adjusted. Similarly, pressing
the [ B ] button will cause its indicator to glow or-
ange, signifying VFO-B adjustment. Therefore,
press the [ A ] or [ B ] button to select the desired
VFO, then press the [ AM/FM ] button to select the
FM mode.
2. Rotate the Main Tuning Dial knob (in the case of VFO-
A operation) to tune the desired operating frequency.
Pressing the microphone [ UP ] or [ DWN ] button will
cause the frequency to change in 5 kHz steps.
3. Press the microphone PTT switch (or press the front
panel [ MOX ] button) to transmit. Speak into the mi-
crophone in a normal voice level. Release the PTT or
[ MOX ] switch to return to receive.

4. There are two methods of adjusting the microphone
gain for FM operation. At the factory, a default level
has been programmed that should be satisfactory for
most situations. However, using Menu item "079 F3E
MICGAIN", you may set a different fixed value, or
you may choose the "MCVR" option which then lets
you use the front panel [ MIC ] knob to set the micro-
phone gain in the FM mode.

The Transmit Monitor is another helpful way of veri-
fying proper adjustment of the FM MIC Gain. By press-
ing the [ MONI ] button, and then adjusting the [ MONI ]
knob for a comfortable listening level while you are
transmitting, you will be able to hear the difference in
deviation as you make adjustments.
FM is only used in the 28 MHz and 50 MHz Amateur
bands covered in the FT
FM on any other bands.
