These tests involve the use of volta ges and cu rr ents that can cause inj ury a nd shou ld onl y be
per formed by qu alifie d per sonnel familia r w i th ES D and e lectr ical saf ety p recaut ions.
Pr ior to ca rryi ng out any inspecti on or te st pr oc edur e, d isconnect all e xtern al eq uipment fro m the
Test Set and disconne ct th e Test Se t f rom t he A C Pow er Supp ly. All tests should include the
instr ument' s ow n supply lead, all covers mu st be fit ted a nd t he 390 0 A C P ow er Suppl y Sw itch must
be i n the ON positio n.
Reco mm e nded t ests a nd insp ection should be car ried out in t he f ollow ing sequence:

Ear th bonding test s should be p erf ormed using a 25 A ( 12 V maximum o pen cir c uit voltag e) D C
source . Tests sh ould b e limit ed t o a ma xi mu m dur ation of 5 seconds and h ave a pass limit of 0.1
ohm aft er allow ing fo r the r esistance of the supply lea d. Exceedin g the 5 second te st durat ion can
damage t he Test Set . Th e tests sh ould be ca rri ed out betw een t he supply ea rth and expose d case
metalw or k. N o attempt shoul d be made t o per for m the test s on functi onal e arth s (e. g., signal
carr ying co nnector shell s or screen connec t ions) as t his damag es the Test Set .

A 500 V DC te st sho uld b e app lied betw een the prot ective ear th co nnectio n and combine d live and
neut ral suppl y conn ections w hile the 3 900 AC Pow er S upply Sw itch is in th e ON position . T o avoid
swit ching the live and neut ral poles on th e Test S et, establi sh the live/ neutr al l inks on the
applia nce te ster or its co nnector . The test voltag e should be applied for 5 se conds be fore takin g
the measure me nt.
Aer ofle x uses r einf orced insulat ion in the constr uction of the 3900 and, ther efor e a minimum pass
limit of 7 Mohm sho uld be achieve d dur ing t his t est.
When a D C pow er a dapter is provid ed w ith the equipment , t he a dapter must pass t he 7 Mohm te st
limit.
Aer ofle x does not r ecommend dielect ric f lash t esting dur ing r outi ne saf ety t ests. Most port able
applia nce te sters use A C for the dielect ric stren gth test which can d amage t he supp ly inpu t f ilter
capacit ors.
