The latency, data throughput performance, and notebook power consumption of wireless adapters also vary depending on your configuration choices.

    The default wireless network name (SSID) for the gateway is the last six digits of the WiFi MAC address. NETGEAR recommends that you change this name for better wireless security and to make it easier to recognize your network when you want to connect to it wirelessly.

NETGEAR recommends that you change the default password to a more secure password. The ideal password should contain no dictionary words from any language, and should be a mixture of both uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

Hops are the steps a packet takes between routers. The number of hops can range from 1 to 255. The default value for the advertisement time to live is four hops, which should be fine for most home networks.

Check that the numbered Ethernet LEDs light momentarily. After a few seconds, check that the LEDs are lit for any local ports that are connected.
