Solid-state drives (SSDs), also known as flash drives, follow similar rules as regular hard disk drives
(HDDs). For example, SSDs physically resemble, install in the same manner, and in most of the same
slots as HDDs. However, some restrictions and configuration rules are specific to the SSD.
Use Table 1 on page 2 to determine the solid-state drive rules for your system.
Table 1. Solid-state drive rules for the 9040-MR9 system
Adapter
PCIe3 SAS RAID adapter
quad-port 6 Gb x8 (FC
EJ0K, CCIN 57B4)
The adapter must be in
PCIe slot C12.
PCIe3 SAS RAID adapter
quad-port 6 Gb x8 (two FC
EJ0K; two CCIN 57B4)
The adapters must be in
PCIe slots C12 and C9.
2. Ensure that the software that is required to support the feature is installed on your system. For more
information about software prerequisites, see the IBM Prerequisite website. If the required firmware,
software, or fix packs are not installed on your system, go to the Fix Central website to download and
install them before you continue.
3. Review the drive slot and service indicator locations. The disk drive and SSD slots are located in the
front of the system.
Figure 1 on page 3 and Figure 2 on page 4 show the disk drive or solid-state drive slot locations
and the service indicator locations for a 9040-MR9 system.

Mixing rules
• Feature code (FC) EJBB can be used to configure up to 8 drives on a
single controller.
• Drives can be configured as just a bunch of disks (JBOD) or in RAID
0, 5, 6, 10, depending on the OS support.
• SSDs must be configured in RAID 0, 5, 6, 10.
• SSDs and HDDs can be mixed in the disk drive backplane, but
cannot be mixed in the same RAID array.
• FC EJBB allows the unused ports on the adapter to be used for the
attachment of an external disk drive enclosure in mode 2 only.
• FC EJSB can be used to split the disk drive backplane into two sets
of 4 drives that use one controller each.
• HDDs can be configured as JBOD or in RAID 0, 5, 6, 10 depending
on the operating system support.
• SSDs must be configured in RAID 0, 5, 6, 10.
• SSDs and HDDs can be mixed within each side of a split-disk disk
drive backplane, but cannot be mixed in the same RAID array.
• FC EJSB allows the unused ports on each adapter to be used for the
attachment of an external disk drive enclosure in mode 2 only.
