Disk drives or solid-state drives for the 9040-MR9
system
Find information about installing, removing, and replacing disk drives or solid-state drives (SSDs) in the
®
IBM Power System E950 (9040-MR9) server.
If you are installing, removing, or replacing mainstream SSDs, it is not supported to mix mainstream
drives with enterprise drives in disk arrays. Also, you need to monitor the amount of life that is remaining
in the mainstream drives. For more information about these drives, see "Mainstream solid-state drives"
on page 40.
Installing a disk drive or solid-state drive in the 9040-MR9 system
Find information about installing disk drives or solid-state drives (SSDs) in the IBM Power System E950
(9040-MR9) server.
About this task
If you are installing a disk drive or SSD in a 5887 disk drive enclosure or ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure,
see Enclosures and expansion units (http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER9/p9ham/
p9ham_kickoff.htm). Select the enclosure that you are working on, and then select Installing parts >
Disk drives or SSDs.
Before you install a feature, ensure that the software that is required to support the feature is installed on
your system. For more information about software prerequisites, see the Power Systems Prerequisites
website (https://www14.software.ibm.com/support/customercare/iprt/home). If the required software is
not installed, see the following websites to download it, and then install it before you continue:
• To download firmware updates, software updates, and fixes, see the Fix Central website (http://
www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/).
• To download Hardware Management Console (HMC) updates and fixes, see the Hardware Management
Console Support and downloads website (https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/hmcl/
home.html).

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to install the part
in the system. For instructions, see Installing a part by using the HMC (www.ibm.com/support/
knowledgecenter/POWER9/p9haj/hmcinstall.htm).
If your system is not managed by an HMC, complete the steps in this procedure to install a disk drive or
SSD.
Preparing the 9040-MR9 system to install a disk drive or solid-state drive
To prepare the system to install a disk drive or solid-state drive, complete the steps in this procedure.
About this task
Note: When drive slots are available in a server and enclosure, fill the slot positions in the server first.
However, you can choose a different disk drive or solid-state drive placement that depends on your data
protection strategy.
