OTDR 4.1 OTDR brief introduction 4.1.1 OTDR basic principles The full English name of OTDR is optical time domain reflectometer, OTDR is a precise photoelectric integrated instrument which is made by using the Rayleigh scattering and the backscattering generated by Fresnel reflection when light is transmitted in optical fiber. It is widely used in the maintenance, construction and monitoring of optical cable lines, and can measure the length of optical fiber, transmission attenuation of optical fiber, joint attenuation and fault location.

This situation often happened in a long distance testing, caused by under-range dynamic range of the OTDR that the energy of it can not support a long distance transmission or caused by a under-range preset testing range of distance or pulse width corresponding to the actual fiber length.
