14.0 Troubleshooting JWSS-18B Scroll Saw

Symptom
Motor will not start.
Motor will not start:
fuses blow or circuit
breaker trips.
Machine slows when
operating.
Tilting mechanism
difficult to move.
Blades frequently
break.
Blade refuses to
tension properly, or
keeps slipping.
Blade drift.
Excessive vibration.

Possible Cause
Low voltage.
Open circuit in motor or loose
connection.
Damaged cord or plug.
Carbon brushes worn.
Short circuit in line cord or plug.
Short circuit in motor or loose
connections.
Incorrect fuses or circuit breakers in
power line.
Applying too much pressure to
workpiece.
Caked dust or other obstruction in
trunnion assemblies.
Incorrect blade tension.
Blade being overworked.
Wrong blade type for job.
Blade twisting in workpiece.
Too few teeth per inch.
Blade not seated properly.
Blade tension lever needs tightening.
Set screws in upper blade chuck are
backed out, not contacting blade.
Blade clamp has oil or debris on it.
Some drift is unavoidable depending
upon size of blade and type of cut.
Incorrect blade tension.
Saw improperly mounted.
Unsuitable mounting surface.
Arms/linkage system not tight.
Loose motor mounting.
Correction *
Check power line for proper voltage.
Inspect all lead connections on motor for
loose or open connections.
Inspect and replace.
Replace brushes.
Inspect cord or plug for damaged
insulation and shorted wires.
Inspect all connections on motor for loose
or shorted terminals or worn insulation.
Install correct fuses or circuit breakers.
Feed workpiece more slowly.
Clean trunnion areas and apply light dabs
of grease to contacting parts.
Set proper tension.
Reduce feed rate.
Select proper blade.
Avoid side pressure on blade. Reduce
feed rate.
Blade should have minimum 3 teeth in
contact with workpiece.
Inspect entry of blade into upper and lower
blade chucks.
Tighten tension lever.
Tighten set screws.
Clean blade clamp, ends of set screws.
Compensate by manipulation of workpiece
into blade.
Increase tension.
Secure saw properly to bench or stand.
Less vibration will occur with a heavier
work bench. Use pads or fiber washers at
mounting contact points.
Tighten trunnion lock knob.
Tighten motor mount screws.
