    Basic Operation OperationButtons ThrottleUp ThrottleupthepowertoyourtrackbypressingthetopendoftheThrottle ControlRockerSwitchfirmlyforabout5seconds,untiltheengine'sheadlightand lightedcarsburnbright. Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)onyourremoteonce. Iftheengine doesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,youmaynot havesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove. Pressthethrottleupfora fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove. Toincreaseordecreasetrackvoltage, andthereforetrainspeed,pressthethrottlecontrolrockerswitch. Pressingthetopendof thethrottlewillincreasevoltageandspeed. Pressingthebottomendofthethrottlewill decreasevoltageandspeed. Theenginewillmaintainthespeedyousetafteryourelease thethrottleuntilyoupressitagaintochangethevoltageandspeed. Thesoundoftheliftbarandairlinedepletionwill play,andtheknucklewillbereleased. Fire Whistle Whistle Whistle Whistle Bell Front Coupler SpeedControl: M.T.H.enginesequippedwithProto-Sound2.0havespeedcontrolcapabilitiesthatallow theenginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,much likeanautomobilecruisecontrol. Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheengine willmaintainthespeedyouset. Whiletheengineisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcan opttoturnitoff. Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincrease asittravelsdownward. Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileonthe run.Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeed controlisonthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelfor operationwithspeedcontrolofftoavoidhigh-speedderailments. Whenspeedcontrolis off,thevolumewilldroptoallowforbetterlowvoltageoperation. Toturnspeedcontrolonandoff, p u t t h e e ngineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe transformer'swhistlebuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,allowing approximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress.

    Maintenance CareoftheRemoteControl YourRailKingRemoteControlSystemshouldofferyearsoftrouble-freeservice. There areafewthingsyoucandotoensuretrouble-freeoperation: Ifyourtrainrespondsinconsistently,replaceoldbatterieswithfreshones. Donot mixoldandnewbatteries. Removebatteriesbeforestoringforextendedperiods. Donotdroptheremote. Itcandamagethedelicateelectronicsinside. AnyattemptbyanyoneotherthananauthorizedM.T.H.repairpersontoopenand repairthehandheldtransmitterorlock-onmayresultindamageandthelossof warrantyprotection. Lubrication Instructions Theengineshouldbeoiledandgreasedinordertorunproperly. Regularlylubricateallsiderodsandlinkagecomponentsandpickuprollers DONOT topreventsqueaking. Uselighthouseholdoil,suchasthatfoundinM.T.H.'s OVER OIL maintenancekit. Donotoveroil. Useonlyadroportwooneachpivot point. LubricateValveGear LubricatePick-UpRollers LubricateSideRods (DoNotOiltheFlatPartof Pick-UpRollers) Greasing Instructions Thelocomotive'sinternalgearingwasgreasedatthefactory. Greaseengineevery50 Removethescrewfromthechassistoopen thegreaseport. Insertthegreasetubetipintotheportand squeezethetubeonceortwicetoaddgrease tothegearbox.

CleaningtheWheels,TiresandTrack Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickups fordirtandbuildup,whichcancausepoorelectrical contactandtractionandprematurelywearoutthe neoprenetractiontires. Wheelsandtirescanbe cleanedusingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholapplied withacottonswab. Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluid andacleanragordenatured(notrubbing)alcohol. Unplugthetransformerandwipetherailsofthetrack, turningtheragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusing cleanclothontherails. BecausethemanufacturingprocessleavesacoatingonRealTrax centerrail,youshouldcleantherailsafterthefirst30minutesofuse(youmaynoticean electricalsmellduringinitialuseasthecoatingwearsoff;thisisnormal). Thereafter, keepaneyeonthetrackandcleanitwhenitgetsdirtytoensuregoodelectricalcontact andtolengthenthelifeofthetires. Traction TireReplacement Instructions Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresontherearsetof flangeddrivers. Whilethesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat somepoint. STEP Removethesiderods(therodsthatconnecteachdrivewheeltotheother)from thewheelsinordertoslipthenewtireoverthegrooveddrivewheel. Thesebolts canbeloosenedwitha5mmnutdriver. Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol. STEP Makesuretheoldtirehasbeencompletelyremovedfromthegrooveinthedrive wheel,usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdrivertopryawayanyremains. Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol. Slipthenewtireontothewheel. Youmayfinditusefultousetwosmallflathead screwdriverstostretchthetireoverthewheel.

Whenstoringtheunitforlongperiodsoftime,you SmokeUnit maywanttoaddabout15dropsoffluidto ON/OFFSwitch preventthewickfromdryingout. Afterremovingtheenginefromstorage,add another25dropsoffluid,lettingthewicksoak upthefluidfor15minutespriortooperation. Ifyouexperiencepoorornosmokeoutputwhenthe smokeunitisonandhasfluid,checkthewicktoseeifit hasbecomehard,blackened,andunabsorbentaroundthe heatingelement. Removetheboilerasshownbelow. SmokeUnitCover Removethesmokeunitinspectioncoverfromthe locomotive'sbody(seeright). Afterremovingthechassis andinspectioncoverscrews,lifttheinspectionplateaway andinspectthewick.     STEP Oncethelocomotiveboilerhasbeenremoved fromitschassis,locatethebulbbracketasseenin theillustrationontherightandrotatethe headlightbulbcounter-clockwisetoremove. ReplaceHeadlightBulb CabooseLightBulbReplacement Toreplacetheinteriorlightbulbsfollowtheseinstructionsandseethediagramsbelow. YoucanobtainreplacementbulbsdirectlyfromtheM.T.H.PartsDepartment. STEP STEP Lowerthechassisfromthe shell,takingcarenottopull thewiresout. Removethefour(4) screwslocatedunder thecaboose'strucks. STEP STEP Carefullyloosenthe endframesonboth endsfromthestep platform. Lowerthe Frame chassisfrom Thengrasptheend theshell, framebythebottom takingcarenot andpivotoutward5 topullthe degrees. Remove wiresout. thestepplatforms StepPlatform frombothends. STEP Light Bulb Replacethebulbbypushingthesocket upatananglefromthebulbholderand (Part#CG-0000017)

    Self-ChargingBatteryBack-Up ThespecialNiCad7-cell8.4vself-chargingbatteryrechargescontinuouslyduringtrain operationand shouldlastforuptofiveyears. Thebatteryisadrybatterythatshouldnot leakorcauseanydamagetoyourengine. Dependinguponwhenyourenginewas built,itmayneedtobechargedrightoutofthebox. Ifenginesoundsseemdistorted orgarbledatlowvoltagesorbecomesilentwhenpowerfromthetransformeristurned off,testthebatterytodeterminewhetheritshouldberechargedorreplaced. Test: Puttheengineinneutralandleavethetrackvoltageat10-12volts(high enoughforthelightstoshinebrightlyandtheenginetomovesteadily)for15 minutes. Recharge: Ifthesoundsareimprovedattheendofthe15-minutetestcharge,the batterychargehasrundownandcanberecharged. Thereareanumberofwaysyou candothis: Leavetheengineinneutralwithtrackvoltageat10-12voltsfor6-7hoursso thebatterycanfullyrecharge(ifyourenginehasasmokeunit,besureitis turnedoff). UseM.T.H.'sbatteryrecharger(soldseparately)thatplugsintoawalloutletand a specialportunderthetendertorechargethebatteryovernightwithoutleaving itonthetrack.
