    Basic Operation OperationButtons ThrottleUp ThrottleupthepowertoyourtrackbypressingthetopendoftheThrottle ControlRockerSwitchfirmlyforabout5seconds,untiltheengine'sheadlightand lightedcarsburnbright. Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)onyourremoteonce. Iftheengine doesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,youmaynot havesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove. Pressthethrottleupfora fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove. Toincreaseordecreasetrackvoltage,andthereforetrainspeed,pressthethrottlecontrol rockerswitch. Pressingthetopendofthethrottlewillincreasevoltageandspeed. Pressingthebottomendofthethrottlewilldecreasevoltageandspeed. Theenginewillmaintainthespeedyousetafteryoureleasethethrottleuntilyoupressit againtochangethevoltageandspeed.     Speed Control M.T.H.enginesequippedwithLoco-Soundhavespeedcontrolcapabilitiesthatallowthe enginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,muchlikean automobilecruisecontrol. Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheenginewill maintainthespeedyouset. Theengineisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcanoptto turnitoff. Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincreaseasit travelsdownward. Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileontherun. Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeedcontrolis onthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelforoperation withspeedcontrolofftoavoidhigh-speedderailments. Toturnspeedcontrolonandoff, puttheengineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe transformer'sHornbuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,allowing approximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress. Repeatthe1horn,2 bellscodetoreturnittotheothercondition. Youwillwanttodothisduringtheinitial neutraluponstart-upifyouevercouplethisenginetoanotherenginethatisnot equippedwithspeedcontroltoavoidderailmentanddamagingthemotorsineither engine. Ifyourtrainrespondsinconsistently,replaceoldbatterieswithfreshones. Donot mixoldandnewbatteries. Lubrication and Greasing Instructions Theengineshouldbeoiledandgreasedinordertorunproperly.     STEP Oncethemotormountscrewhasbeenremoved,pullthe motorawayfromthetruckblockandlightlycoatthemotor wormgearandbronzedrivegear(inthetruckblock)with grease. Reassemblethetruckandmotor,beingcarefulnottopinch thepickupandgroundwiresbetweenthetruckblockand motormount. Worm Repeattheprocedureifenginehasmorethanonemotor. Gear Reassemblethechassisandbody,beingcarefulthatthe wiresarenotcaughtbetweenthebodyandchassis,as Bronze thiscanleadtoashortthatmaydamagetheelectronics Drive beyondrepair. Gear ! Lubricatetheoutsidetruckblockidlerand STEP drivegearswithgreaseoccasionally. Truck Drive Block Gear Idler CleaningtheWheels,TiresandTrack Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickupsfordirt andbuildup,whichcancausepoorelectricalcontactandtraction andprematurelywearouttheneoprenetractiontires. Wheelsand tirescanbecleanedusingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholapplied withacottonswab. Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluidandacleanragordenatured(not rubbing)alcohol. Unplugthetransformerandwipetherailsofthetrack,turningtherag frequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleanclothontherails. Becausethe manufacturingprocessleavesacoatingonRealTraxcenterrail,youshouldcleantherails afterthefirst30minutesofuse(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmellduringinitialuseas thecoatingwearsoff;thisisnormal).

U s e a razorbladetotrimawayanyexcesstirethatdoesn'tseat itselfinsidethegrooveproperly. Reassemblethetrucksidestothetruckblocks. LocomotiveLightBulbReplacement FollowthecabremovalinstructionsfoundintheGreasing Instructionssectionofthisbooklet(page10). Rotatetheheadlightbulbcounter-clockwisetoremove. YoucanobtainreplacementbulbsdirectlyfromtheM.T.H. PartsDepartment. CabooseLightBulbReplacement Toreplacetheinteriorlightbulbsfollowtheseinstructionsandseethediagramsbelow. STEP STEP Lowerthechassisfromthe shell,takingcarenottopull thewiresout. Removethefour(4) screwslocatedunder thecaboose'strucks. STEP STEP Carefullyloosenthe endframesonboth endsfromthestep platform.
