Unpacking the Odyssey Imager Remove the Manuals and Accessories Kit and set it aside. Use at least two people to move the Odyssey Imager, as it weighs 32 kg (70 pounds). Lift under the metal enclosure on each side and gently set the Odyssey Imager at its new position.
Installation Overview The Odyssey Infrared Imager is a server device that can be connected via TCP/IP to the system computer or to your network. The basic installation procedure in Chapter 2 describes how to connect the Odyssey Imager directly to the computer, establish communication, and install Odyssey Application Software.
Firewall Recommendations For networks connected to the Internet, the safest way to protect your research and data is to put the Odyssey instrument and computer on a subnet that is behind a firewall. Inexpensive firewall appliances can perform this function. Contact your local IT department for help in selection and configuration if your organization does not already...
If you want to extend this basic configuration so files can be transferred over your network, the Odyssey Imager and computer can be connected to your network as described in Chapter 3. The Ethernet switch and two Cat. 5 RJ-45 network cables included with the system are required for this installation.
XP setup is described later in this chapter). 2) Connect a supplied Cat. 5 RJ-45 cable to the port labeled 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX on the Odyssey back panel as shown below. 3) Connect the other end of the Cat. 5 RJ-45 cable to port one on the switch.
3) Use a pen or small screwdriver to move the shipping lock switch (located on the instrument back panel) to the Operate (down) position. 4) Make sure the Odyssey lid is closed and press the Power key on the instrument keypad. Power Key At the end of startup (up to five minutes in some cases) the instrument...
Basic Installation Procedure Entering the IP Address in Odyssey An IP address must be entered into the Odyssey Imager via the front panel keypad before communication can be initiated with the computer. (An IP address uniquely identifies a device on a network.) Odyssey is configured with a default IP address that is sufficient for...

During processes like scanning, the computer may be idle for a period of time. The default power management options for the computer will put the computer in standby mode after 20 minutes of idle operation. Since this can interrupt ongoing Odyssey processes, the power conservation features should be turned off.
Control Panel window. Logging on to Odyssey To verify that the IP addresses in Odyssey and the computer have been entered correctly, use the following steps to log on to Odyssey and add a user account using an Internet browser.
Page 19
Note: When the browser opens, you will get an error message that implies a connection failure or that the browser cannot find a certain server. This message is not related to Odyssey and can be dismissed. The message is displayed because the browser is configured to automatically load a “home” page from the Internet.

5) When prompted for a user name and password, enter admin in both fields and click OK. “admin” is the default administrator account entered by LI-COR. You must be logged on using an account with administrator rights to add new user accounts. For everyday operation, user accounts with control rights should be used.
Odyssey server.) Setup of the server software is complete. The next step is to install Odyssey Application Software on the computer and add user accounts in the Odyssey Application software that match the accounts created in Odyssey Server Software.

Click Yes to continue the installation, if you accept the terms of the license. 4) Choose whether to make the Odyssey application available to all users of the computer or just the current user, and click Next (this refers to user accounts in the computer, not Odyssey accounts).
Insert the CD for the module in your CD-ROM drive. b) In Odyssey version 2.1 software choose File > Import Keys. c) Use the file selection window to browse for the key file on the CD, click OK, and follow the instructions on screen.

CHAPTER 2 Basic Installation Procedure Configuring Internet Explorer During a scan, the Odyssey Imager creates images and stores them in TIFF files (*.tif). These files can be viewed, analyzed, and downloaded to a local drive using Internet browser software as described in the Odyssey Operator’s Manual.
What’s Next? The basic Odyssey installation is now complete. If you want to start learning Odyssey right away, complete the tutorial exercises in the Odyssey Tutorial Manual. The tutorials contain step-by-step instruc- tions for scanning, band sizing, and quantification. You might also...
For additional privacy, a computer with two network cards can be used to create two separate networks – one for Odyssey and one for a local area network (see Chapter 4). Your network administrator will need to provide certain information before you begin.
Connecting Odyssey To A Network Configuring Odyssey for Network Operation Odyssey can be quickly configured using an Internet browser to open the network setup page in the Odyssey Server Software. 1) Begin by starting your Internet browser application (Netscape 4.5 or above, or Internet Explorer 5.0 or above) and entering...

4) Click the Networking Setup link on the Utilities Page.
The relative merits of several possible configurations are discussed below. Static Addresses vs. DHCP: To log on to the Odyssey server, you must use the IP address or host name (if a host name is assigned). A static IP address is easier to use with Odyssey because it never changes.
IP address assigned. When the IP address automatically expires, you will not be able to contact Odyssey until you determine the new IP address using the instrument keypad (described later in this chapter). For this reason, static IP addresses are generally more trouble-free.
Domain Name Servers field. If there is more than one domain name server, enter only one address per line in the field. 6) Click the Configure button to send the changes to Odyssey and then close your Internet browser software. Configuring Windows XP for Network Operation In Chapter 2, you used the Network Connections control panel to enter an IP address for the basic Odyssey installation.

If your network administrator has made the necessary changes to your network and you are using a static IP address, you should be able to log back on to Odyssey by opening your Internet browser and entering http:// plus the new IP address in the URL/location field.
Determining a Dynamically Assigned IP Address 1) Start the IP Address entry routine by simultaneously pressing both the Stop (N) and Next keys on the Odyssey keypad. (If they are not pressed simultaneously, the Next or Stop function will be executed.)
Connecting Odyssey To A Network The IP address determined by this method may periodically change. At some point in the future, you may try to log on to Odyssey and get an error message. If so, the procedure above can be used to verify that the IP address before performing any other troubleshooting.
4) Enter the new Odyssey IP address in the Host Name field. For a static address, enter the address your network administrator assigned to Odyssey. If Odyssey is configured for DHCP, you must determine the address using the Odyssey keypad as described earlier in this chapter.
• Odyssey is isolated from the LAN, preventing unwanted access to the Odyssey hard disk or operating system. Note, however, that you will not be able to access Odyssey from remote com- puters such as your office computer. • Odyssey is configured with static IP addresses on a separate net- work, preventing periodic communication loss if IP addresses expire and a DHCP server issues new addresses.
