STARTER MOTOR

REMOVING THE PINION

Remove:
Clip 1
y
NOTE:
Using a pry-bar, pry off the clip.

CHECKING THE PINION

1. Check:
Pinion teeth
y
Wear/damage
2. Check:
Clutch movement
y
Damage
NOTE:
Rotate the pinion clockwise, and check that
it freely. Also try to rotate the pinion
counterclockwise and confirm that it locks.

CHECKING THE ARMATURE

1. Check:
Commutator
y
Dirty
Clean (with #600 abrasive
Æ
paper).
2. Measure:
Commutator diameter
y
Out of specification
Commutator diameter limit:
29.0 mm (1.14 in)
73
Replace.
