3. Checking Functions

Check functions when the piano is
delivered.
Inspecting functions prior to tuning during
a customer visit is also effective in
determining subsequent work.
1. Acoustic Piano Section
Check movement and operation of the
keyboard.
Make sure all keys move smoothly
and return to their original position.
Check sound production
Play all keys, from 1 to 88, making
sure that the hammer moves and
strikes the string to produce sound.
Check muting
Play all keys, from 1 to 88, making
sure that the dampers press against
the strings stopping string vibration
when the key is released.
Check timbre
Make sure timbre is mostly even
across the keyboard.
Check for noise and resonance
Play
all
keys
extraneous noise or resonance other
than the sound produced through
normal operation.
Check pedal movement
Damper pedal :
Check that all dampers release the
strings when the damper pedal
(right) is depressed, and that the
checking
for
any
dampers return to their original
position when the pedal is released.
Shift Pedal :
Make sure that the entire action
shifts to the right (leaving one string
open to the left of the hammer), and
the entire action returns to its
original position when the pedal is
released.
Sostenuto Pedal/Bass Damper Pedal :
Press the center pedal and check the
movement of individual pedals.
Sostenuto: Press the damper pedal
and then press the sostenuto pedal.
When releasing only the damper
pedal, check that all dampers lift up.
In this condition, make sure that all
dampers are well balanced and
return to their original positions
while gradually releasing the center
pedal.
Bass Damper:
When the center pedal is depressed,
check that dampers only on the bass
side are lifted up and returned to
their original position as the pedal is
released.
Check for pedal noise
Check for any extraneous noise other
than that that is normally produced
through normal pedal operation.
