MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 1.0 GENERAL The La Marche Model A36D is a filtered controlled ferroresonant float charger designed to power a load while charging a battery in telecommunication applications. It may also be used without a battery.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING REGULATION Steady state output voltage remains within +/- 1/2% of rated voltage for any load current from no load to full load and for input voltages within the rated range.` FILTERING For all conditions of input voltage and output load, output noise is less than 32 dbrn “C”-message weighting and output ripple does not exceed 30 millivolts (rms), on batteries rated in ampere-hours at four (4) times the rated charger current.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING Current limiting A circuit adjustable from 90% to 115% of rated load, limits the DC output current. The current limit is Refer to Section 9.6 for details. factory set at 115% of rated output.

MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING AUDIBLE NOISE Audible noise is not greater than 55 DBA measured at 5 feet from any surface on the unit enclosure. 6.0 INSTALLATION INFORMATION MINIMUM WIRE SIZES Table 2 lists the AC input and the DC output minimum wire size requirements. At distances exceeding 10 feet, the DC wire size should be chosen to keep the voltage difference between the units DC output terminals and the battery at less than 1/2 volt when the unit is fully loaded.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING NATIONAL CODES These wire sizes are based on those recommended in the National Electric Code Table 310-16 for copper wire at 90 degrees C conductor temperature operating in an ambient of 30 degrees C. For higher operating temperatures refer to the derating factors in the National Electric Code Table 310-16.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 7.0 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS & FIELD WIRING (SEE FIGURES A OR B) Make sure that AC power is off at main AC breaker box before installation begins. Terminal blocks are provided for connecting the AC input and DC output. A ground wire must be connected to the units’ case ground.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING An adequate earth ground lead should be connected to the terminal marked “GROUND” or “GND”. Be sure the transformer taps are set for the correct AC input. Input tap setting information located inside the unit.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING When remote sensing is wired, the unit output may have to be readjusted to compensate for the protection diodes on the circuit board. CAUTION: The polarity of the sensing terminals is critical. Check and verify the polarity carefully.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 9.0 ALARM LIGHTS AND SET POINTS Alarm Lights Alarm lights are located on the front of the unit. AC “On”: The LED illuminates when AC power is applied to rectifier and AC breaker is in the “ON” position.

MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 10.1 ADJUSTMENTS & SET POINTS TO CHECK OR CHANGE THE ALARM SETTINGS, push the equalize switch to equalize and hold for five (5) seconds. The display will indicate “CAL” then the low current. “LED” will blink and the display will indicate the low current alarm setting.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 10.3 TIMER MODES To check or change Timer Modes, push and hold equalize switch for 5 seconds, now in the cal alarm adjustment section. The display will scroll, showing each alarm & settings until the timer mode "LED" (the bottom "LED") starts to flash, and the digital display shows P? (?= Mode 0,1,2,3,or 4).
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 11.0 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTIONS 11.1 CIRCUIT OPERATION The Model A36D rectifier circuit design is a controlled ferroresonant. The power transformer PT provides AC to DC isolation , voltage step down, and inherent magnetic current limit.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 11.7 S2A-255 PROGRAMMING AND TRIAC GATE RESISTOR INTERFACE The circuit programs the input voltage for 12, 24, & 48V units and programs the triac gate resistor for 12, 24, or 48V models. The board keeps input voltage to S2A-205/205S at a low level.

MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING High DC output voltage. Check battery voltage for proper number of cells. Check control fuse in unit. Float/Equalize voltage potentiometers not set properly. (See Float/Equalize adjustment procedure for proper voltage setting.) Disconnect battery and loads from rectifier output terminals, put F/E switch in the float position, and apply AC input voltage to rectifier.
Page 23
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 7. Defective shunt. 12.3.4 Charger operates but output voltage is high. Possible Cause: 1. Float/Equalize voltage pots not set correctly (see float/equalize adjustment procedure for proper voltage setting). 2. Circuit regulator assembly S2A-205 is defective.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 12.3.5 Ground and short circuit test. A simple ohmmeter check can be performed to check the unit for a short to ground, primary to secondary breakdown, AC- DC short, or DC ground. Before installation of a new unit, the above checks should be made before installing.
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 4. All diodes must be checked in the event that more than one diode is defective. 5. If the diode is defective, remove the defective diode from the heatsink and replace with a new diode.
Page 26
MODEL A36D SERIES - INSTRUCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING General Maintenance Procedure Yearly 1. Blow out rectifier/inverter with a low-pressure air hose. 2. Make sure all connections are tight. 3. Perform a visual check on all internal components. 4. Check front panel meters and alarms for accuracy.
In addition to the standard one (1) year warranty, La Marche warrants it’s magnetics and power diodes on a parts replacement basis only for four (4) more years under normal use.
If the purchaser elects not to return the equipment to the factory and wishes a factory service representative to make adjustments and/or repairs at the equipment location, La Marche's field service labor rates will apply. A purchase order to cover the labor and transportation cost is required prior to the deployment of the service representative.
