ADJUST YOUR TRACTOR
DANGER
Keep hands, feet, hair and loose clothing away
from any moving parts on engine or tractor
when making any adjustments that require the
engine to be running. DO NOT carry passen-
gers.
READ THESE HINTS BEFORE ADJUSTING
YOUR TRACTOR
Your tractor has two v-belts under the main frame.
e
The tractor drive belt transmits power to the
transaxle, which transmits power to the rear
wheels.
e
The blade drive belt transmits power to the mower
blades.
1 . To adjust the tractor drive belt, you must remove
the mower deck.
2. You do not need to remove the deck for any
other adjustment, but you may do so ·for conve-
nience.
CAUTION
Do not adjust the brake until you understand
how the clutch, the brake and the clutch-brake
pedal work together.
e
The clutch-brake pedal serves two functions,
depending on how far down you press it.
When you press it halfway down, it releases the
tractor drive belt clutch.
When you press it all the way down, it brakes
your tractor.
e
You need to adjust the drive belt and brake so
they work together. The brake must not come
on before the clutch releases.
e
If you adjust the brake incorrectly:
The brakes may start while you are still sending
power to the rear wheels, causing early brake
failure.
The transmission control lever may not work well
when you change speed or direction because it
also controls the brake and the clutch.
CAUTION
At no time during the adjustment or repairs
should the tractor be lifted more than 20
inches from a _level position without taking the
following precautions:
1. Remove gasoline from the tank and run
the engine until the carburetor is dry.
2. Remove the battery (see Remove The
Battery paragraph in MAINTAIN YOUR
MOWER section of this manual).
3. Remove the oil from the crankcase.'
