Circuit 5: Current measurement with a small shunt resistance
Setup information
Install the four resistors and then the jumper as shown in Fig. 2.5. Connect the moving-coil instrument.
Check the placement on the board again and only then connect the battery.
Experiment
Once the battery is connected, the moving-coil instrument will deflect. What is the scale of the deflection?
If everything is fine, the needle will move about two thirds. Unlike the previous experiment, here the instru-
ment is connected in parallel with the series connection of the two 220 Ω resistors. Part of the current flow
– approximately one third – is now diverted by these resistors and will no longer flow through the meter. By
that we have increased the current measurement range of a moving-coil instrument.
