Experiment
It is said that hydrogen promises future human mobility. A fuel cell transforms hydrogen and oxygen envi-
ronmentally neutral in water and generates electricity during this process. It is used to drive electro vehicles.
The common method used to mass produce hydrogen is via the electrolysis of water, that is the separation
of water molecules into the two components hydrogen and oxygen by means of electrical energy. Fill a glass
with tap water and build the circuit as described above. As soon as the battery is connected, gas bubbles
will move up along the electrodes. Hydrogen gas is generated at the electrode connected to the negative
battery terminal. The reaction is even more potent, if you add a bit of washing powder to the tap water.
Oxygen is generated at the positive electrode. The moving-coil instrument signals by a clear needle deflec-
tion that current is flowing.
