Circuit 2: Extending the measuring range
Setup information
Install the resistor and then the jumper as shown in Fig. 2.2. Connect the moving-coil instrument. Check the
placement on the board again and only then connect the battery.
Experiment
Once the battery is connected, the moving-coil instrument will deflect. What is the scale of the deflection? If
everything is working properly; the needle will move and stop roughly in the middle of the scale. Again, this
is a voltage measurement.
The resistor uses more or less half of the battery voltage. Circuit 1 has two resistors in parallel. Thus, the
current flow was twice as much using only half as much voltage.
You could use a greater resistor connected in series with the moving-coil instrument, for example, to
increase the voltage measurement range.
