Managing the twinaxial console

For cabling instructions, see Cabling your server.
v If you plan to use an HMC to manage your hardware, ensure that the HMC is set up and configured.
For HMC setup instructions, see Managing the Hardware Management Console (HMC).
v If you plan to connect a twinaxial console to a POWER6 server, you must have an expansion unit and
an HMC.
v If you plan to manage an i5/OS logical partition with this twinaxial console, ensure that an i5/OS
logical partition is configured, installed, and activated. For information about i5/OS logical partitions,
see Partitioning the server.
v Ensure the active console is configured for the logical partition. See Changing consoles, interfaces, and
terminals.
v You have a current backup of your system or logical partition (including operating systems, licensed
programs, and data). For information about backing up your system or logical partition, see Backing
up and recovering data.
v You have the telephone number for your authorized service provider. You might need to contact your
authorized service provider for the following:
– Hardware problems
– IBM service and support telephone numbers for electronic customer support, if you are outside of
the United States. (For U.S. customers, these telephone numbers are automatically provided during
setup.)
Find the number for your authorized service provider by contacting the dealer from whom you
purchased your system.
To set up a twinaxial console, complete the following tasks:
1. Start the system or logical partition.
2. Sign on to i5/OS using a twinaxial console.
3. If you are not using an HMC to manage hardware, complete the following tasks:
a. Set the system break mode using a twinaxial console.
b. Plan and set up system security and return to this checklist when you have completed this step.
c. Complete the TCP/IP setup and return to this checklist when you have completed this step.
4. Set up your server to connect to service and support and return to this checklist when you have
completed this step.
5. (Optional) Connect the twinaxial cables and feature cables to a network or device.
6. (Optional) Get updates.
7. (Optional) Rename i5/OS using a twinaxial console.
