Automatic Transmission Fluid Level

A t re g u la r intervals, check the flu id
level o f th e a u to m a tic tra n sm issio n
to g e th e r v/ith the engine oil level
p rio r to every long trip , at the latest,
how ever, a fte r every 6,000 m iles
(10,000 km).
C heck tra n sm issio n flu id level w ith
the e ngine idlin g , p a rkin g brake
engaged and s e le c to r lever in
p o sitio n " P " . The v e h ic le m ust be
parked on level g ro u n d . P rio r to the
Lubricants
etc.

a pprox. 1 to 2 m inutes.
M easure oil level w ith the d ip s tic k
c o m p le te ly inserted and the locking
lever released (1).

To w ip e the d ip stick, use a clean,
lin t-fre e c lo th (p re fe ra b ly leather).
To fill th e tra n s m is s io n w ith flu id ,
o n ly p o u r it th ro u g h a fine-m esh
filte r into th e d ip s tic k opening.
Even th e s lig h te s t im p u rity may
cause o p e ra tio n a l trou b le s.
The o il level in the tra n sm issio n
is d e p e n d e n t upon the oil te m p e ra ­
ture. The m axim um and m inim um
oil level m arks on the d ip s tic k are
a p p lic a b le re fe re n ce s o n ly if the
tra n sm issio n flu id has reached its
norm al o p e ra tin g te m p e ra tu re of
176° F (80° C). - If, how ever, the
tra n sm issio n flu id c o o ls dow n to
6 8 -8 6 ° F (2 0 -3 0 ° C), w hich is the
norm al shop te m p e ra tu re range,
then the m axim um oil level w ill be
a p p ro x im a te ly 1.18 in (30 mm) below
the m inim um m a rk on the d ipstick.
W e stress th is p o in t because an oil
change is n o rm a lly p erfo rm ed w hen
the tra n s m is s io n oil has cooled
dow n to shop te m pe ra tu re .
The flu id level m ust not exceed the
d ip s tic k m axim um m ark w ith the
flu id a t o p e ra tin g tem p e ra ture.
D rain o r sip h o n o ff excess fluid , if
required.
Then push d ip s tic k all the w ay in
and sw ing lo ckin g le ve r d o w n ­
w a rd s (2).
