Starting and Shifting Gears

g ra d u a lly re le a sin g the s e rvice
brake. A c c e le ra te g e n tly and do
not pum p the a c c e le ra to r. To rock
a ca r o u t o f so ft g ro u n d (m ud o r
snow ), a lte rn a te ly s h ift one fo rw a rd
gear range and th e reverse g ear
at pa rtia l th ro ttle .
T ra ile r o pe ra tio n
Do not a llo w the e n g in e speed to
d ro p to low at u p h ill g ra d ie n ts to
p re ven t the e n g ine from la b o rin g
at lo w RPMs. D e pending on the
d e g ree of th e in c lin e , s h ift s e le c to r
le ve r to p o s itio n s " S " o r " L" early
enough to m aintain e ng ine RPMs
w ith in best to rq u e range.
S topping
For b rie f halts, e.g. at tra ffic lights,
leave th e s e le c to r lever in a d riving
p o sitio n and c o n tro l v e h ic le w ith
th e s e rvice brake.
For lo n g e r stops w ith th e engine
id lin g , s h ift s e le c to r lever to p o si­
tio n " N " .
W hen sto p p in g th e c a r on a slope,
do not hold it by means o f the
a c c e le ra to r but use the brake. This
avoids s u p e rflu o u s h eating of the
tra n sm issio n .
