This instruction sheet provides you with the information required to
safely own and operate your Little Giant pump. Retain these instructions
for future reference.
The Little Giant pump you have purchased is of the highest quality
workmanship and material, and has been engineered to give you
long and reliable service. Little Giant pumps are carefully tested,
inspected, and packaged to ensure safe delivery and operation. Please
examine your pump carefully to ensure that no damage occurred
during shipment. If damage has occurred, please contact the place of
purchase. They will assist you in replacement or repair, if required.
READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING
TO INSTALL, OPERATE, OR SERVICE YOUR LITTLE GIANT PUMP.

ALL SAFETY INFORMATION. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE

PROPERTY DAMAGE!
DESCRIPTION
The SPBS-12 is designed as a back-up to your primary sump pump
during temporary power outages or if your primary pump fails due to a
blown fuse, defective float switch, or debris clogging the pump.
SAFETY GUIDELINES
Do not use to pump flammable or explosive fluids such as gasoline, fuel
oil, kerosene, etc. Do not use in explosive atmospheres. Pump should
only be used with liquids compatible with pump component materials.
Do not handle pump with wet hands or when standing on a wet or damp
surface, or in water.
To reduce risk of electric shock, be certain that DC control unit is
connected to an outlet protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter
(GFCI). Do not use same 115 V outlet for primary pump and DC control
unit. Do not use extension cord.
In any installations where property damage and/or personal injury
might result from an inoperative or leaking pump due to long term
power outages, discharge line blockage, or any other reason, a backup
system(s) and/or alarm should be used.
The battery required to operate this unit contains acid and proper
precautions must be taken when handling. To prevent accidental
shorting across battery terminals, strap cover securely on battery box.
Do not leave battery uncovered.
Always unplug control unit prior to making connections or disconnections
to battery. A spark near the battery may cause battery explosion.
OPERATION
NOTE: The battery required for operation of this kit is not included. This
kit requires a good quality 12 volt battery to gain maximum pumping
time during a power outage. A deep cycle, 12 volt, 105 amp-hour marine
battery or larger is recommended. A battery of this size will provide
approximately 7 hours of operation in an installation with 8' of head
pressure. Maximum battery size that can fit in the box is 8" height x
7-1/2" width x 12-1/2" length.
The DC control unit is equipped with a 10 amp automatic charger for
maintaining the battery in a ready state, and recharging depends upon
the power drain during the AC power interruption. A completely drained
battery may require up to 24 hours for full recharge.
During operation of the system, the yellow and green light will be

alternately lit as the charger automatically charges the battery as
needed. NOTE: The DC control unit operates automatically and will not
overcharge the battery. It is designed to be connected to the battery and
power supply at all times.
When the back-up pump runs, this indicates that the primary pump did
not empty the sump. An audible tone alarm will sound if this happens.
The alarm can be silenced by momentarily depressing the reset switch
on the front panel. The cause of the primary pump failure must be
investigated. If the alarm is the result of a temporary power outage, then
no service is likely to be required. During this temporary power outage,
the alarm will be set every time the battery powered back-up sump runs
to empty the sump. After the AC power is restored, the charger will
automatically recharge the battery.
The control unit has a battery monitoring system. If the battery cannot
be recharged to a satisfactory level after 24 hours of charging, the alarm
will sound. The alarm from battery failure cannot be reset with the reset
switch. The cause of the non-resettable alarm could be lack of line
power or defective battery. When the battery is brought to an acceptable
level by restoring the power or replacing the battery, the alarm can be
reset by the reset switch.
The battery and battery connections need to be checked every three
months. Handle batteries carefully to avoid contact with acid.
The back-up pump is designed for handling clear water. Do not use it in
septic tanks to pump effluent or sewage pits to pump sewage.
Do not allow the pump to run dry (without liquid). Heat build up caused
by friction will damage the pump parts when run dry.
This unit is permanently lubricated. Oiling is not required.
Do not install or store the pump where it will be exposed to the weather
or to temperatures below freezing.

Customer required to purchase separately:
1. Check valve for primary pump
2. 1-½" pipe as needed
3. 1-½" DWV street elbow H-SPG 45 degree
4. 1-½" DWV WYE
5. Fitting-primary pump discharge to check valve
Customer supplied "WYE" assembly is easier to make if flexible
couplings from check valves are the same height from the bottom
of the basin. (Fig. 1)
If possible, adjust height of check valves so that they are the same
height from the bottom of the basin by adjusting fittings in primary
pump. (Fig. 2)
