Fully SNMP managed using industry standard platforms such as HP OpenView Product Overview Proxim’s Stratum is the first product operating in the U-NII bands to merge high capacity voice and data with ease of installation and operation. Stratum incorporates a MAC layer Ethernet bridge for high capacity bridging of all Ethernet traffic types, including IP and Voice-over-IP.
  • Page 16: Rapid Deployment

The Stratum 100 delivers 100 Mbps full duplex throughput for transport of Ethernet traffic, so the wireless link is no longer a bottleneck on the network. The Stratum 20 provides all of the features of the Stratum 100 but delivers 20 Mbps full duplex throughput and is ideal for applications requiring less bandwidth.
  • Page 17: Standard Configuration

Optional External Antenna Configurations For extended range applications, the ODU at the “B” end of the Stratum link may be supplied with an “N” connector for an external parabolic antenna instead of the integral flat panel antenna. The ODU-B-EXT allows the Stratum to utilize industry standard parabolic antennas.

The path survey should also specify the expected signal strength between the two antennas. Proxim strongly recommends that a qualified radio engineer perform the path survey. The procedure to perform a path survey is beyond the scope of this manual. If you have questions about or problems with the path survey, contact your reseller or Proxim Technical Support.

Assign an IP address to each Stratum IDU. This allows remote management without a direct cable connection to the console port. A unique IP address should be assigned to the IDU at each end of a Stratum link. The IDUs at both link ends must be in the same subnet.
  • Page 39 CHAP (the Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol). For example, if you assign the Stratum an IP address of 192.168.0.100 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, it will automatically assign its RF port an IP address of 192.168.1.100.
  • Page 40: Setting Up The Second Idu

The Link ID is case sensitive. Note that spaces, commas, periods, etc. are not valid characters to use within a Link ID. The Stratum uses the Link ID with the Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). For any given Stratum link, both IDUs must have the same Link ID. Each Stratum link should be given a unique Link ID.

The peak signal value is stored as the antenna sweeps from side to side. The LED is a guide back to the correct peak value. Proxim recommends that two people assist with aiming, one positioned at each antenna, and that they use cell phones to coordinate their efforts. Note that if you follow this procedure, take care to move only one antenna at a time.
  • Page 43: Verifying The Aim And Path Quality

It is important to check signal strength and link performance before using the link for actual network traffic. This will ensure that your line-of-sight path and antenna aiming are satisfactory. To check signal strength, connect to the user interface of either Stratum IDU (as described in Step # 3, earlier in this chapter).
