MAINTENANCE
Essentially,your printer is a robust piece of equipment, but should be
treatedwith amodicumofcarein orderto avoidmalfimctions. F orexample:
Keep yourprinterin a "comfortable"environment. R oughlyspeaking,if
you arecomfortable, t hentheenvironmentis suitablefor yourprinter,too
(see Chapter1).
Do not subjectthe printerto physicalshocksor excessivevibration.
Avoidextremelydustyenvironments. D ust is the enemyof all precision
mechanicaldevices.
To clean the exterior of the printer, use a cloth barely dampenedwith
eitherwaterwith a littledetergentor a little alcohol,but do not allowany
liquid to fall insidethe printer.
The interiorof theprintermay be cleanedwitha smallvacuumcleaneror
a-compressed-airaerosol(sold for this purpose).When performingthis
operation, be sure not to bend or damage any cable connectionsor
electroniccomponents.
REPLACING THE PRINT HEAD
Thisisnot ajob whichyouwillneedto doveryoften.Theprintheadhasbeen
designedto last for about 100millioncharactem.In normaleverydayuse,
thistranslatesto yearsof life.However,if theprintqualityis faint,evenafter
youhavechangedthe ribbonor youhaveadjustedthe gapbetweentheprint
head and the platen (see Chapter1), the printhead will need replacement.
Only use a replacementprinthead as recommendedby your supplier.

Turn OFF the printer, and unplugthe powercord.
Removethe top cover and ribboncartridge.
Ifthepnnterhas beenin operitionimmediately beforethisoperation, t he
print head will be hot. Allow time for the print head to cool before
attempingto work on it.
Move the print head carnage toward the right until you can see the
connectorcover. Removethe comector cover and pull the cable free
from the connector.
Unscrewthe two screwsthat hold the print head in place and set them
aside.
