Maintaining the
Star LaserPrinter 4
TheLaserPrinter4 doesnot requiremuchcare andmaintenance. H owever,
it is importantto perform a few cleaningtasks to maintainyour printerin
goodcondition. T his chapterwillexplainsprocwhuesfor replacingtheEP-
L cartridge, handling the EP-L cartridge and printer, and cleaning the
printer.
8.1 REPLACINGTHE EP-LCARTRIDGE
Replacethe EP-L cartridgein the followingcases:

If printqualityis stilllow,even afieryou haveredistributedthe tonerby
removingthe cartridgeand reckingit gentlyfrom end to end aboutfive
or six times.
Iftransparencyfilmsshowstainproblemateitherthetopor bottomof the
films.
NOTE: For
directionson replacingtheEP-Lcartridge,referto "2.2Install-
"ing the EP-L cartridge".
8.2 STORAGEAND HANDLINGPRECAUTIONS
FORTHE EP-LCARTRIDGE
The
E P-Lcartridgecontainsboththephotosensitive drumandtonerusedfor
printing. Since the drum is extremely sensitive to the light, it may be
permanentlydamagedif it is exposedto the directsunlightor stronglight.
Cakedor unevenlydistributedtonermay resultin poorprintquality.There-
fore, alwaysobservethe followingrules:
Alwayskeep the EP-L cartridgein the aluminumbag in which it was
originallypacked.And do not openthe bag untilyou are readyto install
it in the printer.
