    Safety Instructions Important Safety Instructions Read all of these instructions before starting to use your Stylus Scan. Also be sure to follow all warnings and instructions marked on the Stylus Scan. ❏ Unplug the Stylus Scan before cleaning. Clean with a damp cloth only.

    ❏ If you use an extension cord with the Stylus Scan, make sure the total amperage of the devices plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the cord’s ampere rating. Also, make sure the total ampere rating of all devices plugged into the wall outlet does not exceed the wall outlet’s ampere rating.

    Setup Guide Releasing the Transportation Lock Before connecting the Stylus Scan to a power source, you must release the transportation lock. To release the transportation lock, follow the steps below. 1. Open the document cover. 2. Open the maintenance cover.

    3. Slide the transportation lock, as shown in the illustration below, to release the scanner carriage. Note: Be sure to lock the transportation lock again before moving the Stylus Scan. 4. Close the maintenance cover and document cover. Attaching the Paper Support Insert the paper support into the slots at the rear of the Stylus Scan.

    Plugging in the Stylus Scan 1. Make sure that the Stylus Scan is turned off. 2. Check the label on the back of the Stylus Scan to make sure the voltage required by the Stylus Scan matches that of the your electrical outlet.

  • Page 15 2. Insert the EPSON Stylus Scan 2500 Software for Windows CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. The Select Language dialog box appears. 3. Select the language you want and click OK. 4. Click the Add Software button.
  • Page 16 5. The EPSON Software Setup dialog box appears. Make sure there is a check mark next to EPSON SMART PANEL and EPSON Stylus Scan 2500 Drivers. Clear the check marks next to the names of any software that you do not want to install.
  • Page 17 9. In Windows 98, the following dialog box appears. Select LPT (Printer Port), then click Next to begin installation. (If this dialog box does not appear, go to the next step.) 10. When installation is complete, click OK to start the EPSON Screen Calibration utility. Note: Be sure to calibrate your screen and Stylus Scan to ensure that the colors of reproduced images closely match the originals.

  • Page 28 Installing the software in your Macintosh To print and scan with your Stylus Scan, you need to install the following software included on the EPSON Stylus Scan 2500 Software for Macintosh CD-ROM shipped with your Stylus Scan. This software must be installed before connecting the Stylus Scan to your Macintosh.
  • Page 29 Mac OS 8.5 or later, you do not need to install iMac Update 1.0. 1. Turn on your Macintosh and insert the EPSON Stylus Scan 2500 Software for Macintosh CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. The EPSON window appears.
  • Page 30 4. Click the Add Software button. 5. The EPSON Software Setup dialog box appears. Make sure there is a check mark next to EPSON SMART PANEL and EPSON Stylus Scan 2500 Drivers. Clear the check marks next to the names of any other software that you do not want to install.

  • Page 32 11. The EPSON Screen Calibration utility starts automatically. In the following window, move the slider to the right or left until the two shades of the gray horizontal stripes match. Note: The gray stripes will not perfectly blend together; however, try to make the two tones match as closely as possible.

  • Page 35: Installing Ink Cartridges

    Installing Ink Cartridges Before installing the ink cartridges, note the following. Warning: The ink cartridges are self-contained units. Under ordinary use, ink will not leak from a cartridge. If ink does get on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water.
  • Page 36 Caution: Do not move the print head by hand. Doing so may damage the Stylus Scan. 3. Lift the ink cartridge clamp. 4. Open the ink cartridge packages. Remove the yellow tape seals from the cartridges.
  • Page 37 Caution: ❏ Remove the yellow tape seals from the cartridges before installing them; otherwise the cartridges will be damaged and will become unusable. ❏ Do not remove the blue portion of the tape seals from the cartridges; otherwise the cartridges will clog and become unusable.
  • Page 38 6. Press the ink cartridge clamps down until they lock in place. Caution: Once you install the ink cartridges, do not open the clamps again until you need to replace the ink cartridges. Opening the clamps makes the cartridges unusable. 7.

    The ink charging process takes about one minute and a half to complete, during which time the Operate light flashes and the Stylus Scan produces a variety of mechanical sounds. These sounds are normal. When the ink delivery system has been charged, the print head returns to the home (far right) position and the Operate light stops flashing.

Printing a nozzle check pattern Follow the on-screen instructions to check the print-head nozzles. If the on-screen instructions do not appear on your system, follow the instructions below.

    Uninstalling the USB driver 1. Click Start, point to Settings and Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Scanners and Cameras icon. 3. Select EPSON Stylus Scan 2500, then click Remove. 4. Click OK and close the dialog box. 5. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

There are four control panel operation modes. LCD panel messages and operation vary by mode.

    EPSON distributes special media that are formulated for the ink used in EPSON ink jet devices. It is recommended that you use these media to ensure high-quality results. See “EPSON special media” on page 140 for a complete list of these products.

See the instructions included with the media to determine which side is the printable surface. Some media come with one corner removed to help identify the correct loading direction, as shown in the illustration.

    Set the adjust lever to the “+” position before printing on the second side. About special media cleaning sheets Cleaning sheets packaged with EPSON special media should not be used with the Stylus Scan. These sheets are unnecessary, and may cause jams.
  • Page 56 Load envelopes flap edge first with the flap side down, as shown in the illustration. Available envelopes sizes are: No.10, DL, C6 ❏ Do not use envelopes that are curled or folded. Make sure to flatten the envelope flaps before loading. Also avoid using envelopes that are too thin as they may curl during printing.

The printer driver lets you choose from a wide variety of settings to get the best results for the type of printout you want to make.     From the Start menu 1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Printers. 2. Select the EPSON Stylus Scan 2500 icon, then select Properties from the File menu. The printer software window appears.

  • Page 63 Custom settings let you make a wide range of changes. In the Custom settings list, you’ll find ready-made settings provided by EPSON designed to match a particular kind of printout, such as graphs and charts used in a presentation, or images taken by a digital camera.

    Previewing your printout To see a preview of your document before printing it, select the Print Preview check box on the Main menu. When you print your document, the Print Preview window appears: The Preview dialog box contains several icon buttons you can use to perform the following functions.

    ❏ Apply watermarks. The watermark you select will appear in the previewed image. The Add and Remove options allow you to specify which pages in the document you wish to be printed. To add or remove page, you must first highlight the page in the list of page icons appearing on the left side of the preview window.

  • Page 74 Using Photo Enhance Mode The Photo Enhance option provides a variety of image-correction settings that you can apply to your photo images before printing. Photo Enhance does not affect your original data. If you are printing photos taken with a digital camera, you can also select the Digital Camera Correction check box to give your printed images the smooth, natural appearance of photographs taken with a film camera.

    1. First, verify the Media Type and Ink settings in the Print dialog box. For details, see “Making the Media Type settings” on page 66. 2. Click the Custom button in the Print dialog box. This activates the Custom Settings list, located below and to the right of the Custom radio button.

The Preview dialog box contains six buttons you can use to perform the following functions. Selection Lets you select, move, and resize watermarks. Zoom Enlarges or reduces the size of the previewed page.

    4. If you are satisfied with the previewed image, click Print. If you are not satisfied with the appearance of the image, click Cancel. The Preview and Print dialog boxes close with the current print settings preserved. Open the Print dialog box again to make additional changes to the print settings.

    Scanning Placing a Document Before scanning a document, remember to respect the rights of copyright owners. Do not scan published text or images without first checking the copyright status. 1. Turn on the Stylus Scan by pressing the P power button. The Operate light starts flashing.
  • Page 82 3. Open the document cover. 4. Place the document on the document table, with the side to be scanned facing down. Make sure that the document is carefully aligned with the edges of the document table.
  • Page 83 5. Close the document cover gently so that the document does not move. Note: ❏ Make sure the document is flat against the glass surface, otherwise the scanned image will be out of focus. Also be sure to close the document cover to prevent interference from external light.

Setting up EPSON Scanner Monitor EPSON Scanner Monitor is software that recognizes when the Scan button is pressed and sends information to an assigned application which supports the Scan Button feature and EPSON Scanner Monitor, such as EPSON SMART PANEL.

    Replacing Ink Cartridges The Stylus Scan's Error light and panel message will inform you when it is time to get a replacement ink cartridge ready, and when it is time to replace the ink cartridges. Note: If an ink cartridge is damaged or old, you may need to replace it before it runs out of ink.
