sure
the
bearing
inserts
and
the
bearing bore in the connecting
rod
and cap are clean. Foreign mate-
rial
under
the
inserts may
di stort the
bearing and cause a
failure
.
Install
the bearing
inserts
in the connecting
rod
and
cap with
th
e
tangs
fitting
in
the
slots
provided.
CONNECTING ROD
CLEANING AND INSPECTION
The connecting rods
and
related
parts
should
be carefully
inspected
and
checked for conformance
to
specifications.
Various
forms of
en-
gine wear caused
by
these parts can
be readi
ly
identified.
A
shiny
surface on the pin boss
side of
the
piston
usuall
y
indicates
that
a connecting rod
is bent or the
piston pin hole
is
not in
proper
re-
latio
n
to
the
piston
skirt and
ring
grooves.
Abnormal
connecting
rod

bearing
wear
can be
caused by
ei ther
a
bent connecting rod, an
improperly
machined
c
rankpin.
or
a
tapered
connecting
rod
bore.
Twisted connecting rods wi
ll
not
create
an
easily
identifiable
wear
pattern,
but
badly twisted
rods
will
di sturb the
action
of
the
entire
piston,
rin
gs,
a
nd
connecting
rod
asse
mbly
and
may be
the
cause
of excessive oil
consumption.
Clean
the
connecting
rod
in sol-
vent, including
the
co
nnecting rod
bore and
the
back of the
inserts.
Do
not use a ca
ustic
cleaning
solution.
Blowo
ut
all
passages
with com-
pressed air.
Inspect the connecting
rods
for
signs
of
fractures and the bearing
bores
for out-of-round
and
taper. If
the bore
exceeds
the recommended
limits
and
/
or
if the
connec
ting
rod
is fractured
,
it
should
be
replaced.

pin

nuts
and bolts.
