  • Page 26: Choosing The Printer Location

2-5 Choosing the printer location Choosing the printer location The location should provide ample space for ventilation and easy servicing of the printer. Make sure the surface is flat, level, and sturdy so that the gum pegs on the printer body or on the optional paper feeder unit (if used) can rest securely on it. The graphics below illustrate the space requirements of the Colorwriter.
  • Page 27 2-6 Choosing the printer location • The printer should not be placed in a built-in installation unless proper ventilation is provided. • Do not install the printer where it is exposed to smoke, steam, an open flame, or direct sunlight. If the printer will inevitably be exposed to direct sunlight, use a heavy curtain to shade the printer.
  • Page 28 2-7 Choosing the printer location The printer weights about 110 lb (50 kg) and therefore requires two or more people to carry it. Do not attempt to lift the printer by yourself. • Page 38 2-17 Installing consumables Rock it up and down five or six times to distribute the toner evenly. Do not try to redistribute the toner in a used or unsealed cartridge—the toner may leak. Place the toner cartridge on a flat surface, and then pull the sealing tape completely out in the direction indicated.

  • Page 41: Installing The Drum Cartridge

2-20 Installing consumables Installing the drum cartridge The drum cartridge contains the photosensitive drum, on which the toner is deposited before it is transferred onto the paper. The drum cartridge is extremely sensitive to light and may deteriorate if exposed to light.
  • Page 42 2-21 Installing consumables Push the handle on the drum cartridge door in the direction of the arrow to open the door. Remove the drum cartridge from its protective bag. Do not open the protective bag or drum cartridge cover until you are ready to install it.
  • Page 43 2-22 Installing consumables Insert the end of the cartridge with the mark into the V-shaped opening, as shown below. Be sure your transfer drum release handle is in the down position, to avoid scratching the photosensitive drum. While holding the cover with one hand and the cartridge horizontally, gently slide the drum into the compartment, letting the drum rest on the rails of the compartment.
  • Page 44 2-23 Installing consumables When the drum cartridge is completely inside the printer, remove the cover. Avoid touching the surface of the photosensitive drum with your fingers when removing the drum cartridge cover. Keep the cover to protect the used drum later. Push the drum all the way in and make sure the latch is in the locked position.
  • Page 45: Installing The Waste Toner Bottle

2-24 Installing consumables Installing the waste toner bottle The waste toner bottle collects any excess toner remaining on the photosensitive drum surface. After the toner image is transferred onto the paper, the drum surface is scraped and any excess toner is forwarded to the waste toner bottle. Two waste toner bottles come with the printer and each drum cartridge kit.
  • Page 46 2-25 Installing consumables Close the drum cartridge door to hold the waste toner bottle in place. Push up the transfer drum release handle to lock the transfer drum in position. This completes the waste toner bottle installation.
  • Page 47: Installing The Silicone Oil Bottle

2-26 Installing consumables Installing the silicone oil bottle The oil bottle supplies silicone oil to the fixing assembly, which fixes the toner on the paper. Follow these guidelines when you install silicone oil: • Use only the recommended silicone oil (see Appendix F of the User Guide for information on ordering consumables).
  • Page 48 2-27 Installing consumables Do not shake the bottle or the oil may spill. The oil is very slippery, and may present a skidding or slipping hazard. After a spill or leak, use absorbent material to contain and collect excess oil for disposal. Thoroughly clean the floor or other surface of all traces of the oil.
  • Page 49 2-28 Installing consumables Close the front door. You cannot close the front door unless the silicone oil bottle stopper, the drum cover, and the transfer drum release handle are in their original positions. This completes the installation of the printer consumables. For information on ordering supplies, see Appendix F of the User Guide.
