PostScript printer includes all of the Level 1 operators with the additional Level 2 operators. Although most Level 1 drivers will properly control the DEClaser 1152, you will require a Level 2 driver to take advantage of the benefits of PostScript Level 2. PostScript Level 2 drivers are available from your vendors.
  • Page 8 PostScript and PCL4 Files The DEClaser 1152 printer primarily a PostScript printer. For applications that do not have a PostScript printer driver, the DEClaser 1152 printer provides Hewlett-Packard PCL4 emulation as an alternate language interface. These two language interfaces are quite different in nature. This section describes the differences between the two languages.

  • Page 25: Setting Up Multiple Communications Channels

Setting Up Multiple Communications Channels The DEClaser 1152 printer can process print requests from multiple communications channels sequentially. • Page 27 Fonts The DEClaser 1152 printer has 17 built-in fonts, one of which is the Symbols Set. An optional font cartridge is available with 26 additional fonts. PostScript Level 2 uses a mechanism slightly different from Level 1 to access the fonts in the font cartridge. If an application queries the printer to determine which fonts are available, it is likely that the application will find only the built-in fonts.

  • Page 30: When To Use Decimage

6.2 When to Use DECimage Images processed using DECimage require more time to print than images printed without DECimage. On smaller images, the high-quality output using DECimage should outweigh the additional computation time required. However, on large, high-resolution, full-page images, the additional computation time is significant, and you have to decide whether or not to use DECimage.

  • Page 32: Invoking Decimage On Vms Platforms

DECprint Supervisor User’s Guide 6.5 Using DECimage on Non-VMS Platforms A non-VMS user can invoke DECimage on the DEClaser 1152 printer by sending the PostScript Level 2 code to the printer in two ways: 1. The preferred method is to append code to the beginning of your PostScript file to invoke DECimage for that print job only.
  • Page 33: Invoking Decimage For The Current Print Job

In some cases, using the compatibility operators can reduce the amount of coding required. As a general guideline, use only Level 2 constructs with the DEClaser 1152 printer. 6.5.2 Invoking DECimage Persistently If a platform or application does not allow you to append code to the beginning of the PostScript print job, you can invoke DECimage persistently across power cycles.

An example of increasing contrast would be setting punch1 to 0.2 and punch2 to 0.8. Input values between 0.0 and 0.2 are mapped to black (0.0) and input values between 0.8 and 1.0 are mapped to white (1.0). Intermediate values between punch1 and punch2 are linearly mapped, or stretched, between 0.0 and 1.0.
  • Page 36: Setting The Dotsize

6.6.3 Setting the Dotsize The dotsize parameter is a positive integer that determines the size of the smallest output dot (in pixels) in rendered images. A dotsize value of 1 or 2 produces the best rendered images. When the device can faithfully display isolated black and white dots, use a dotsize value of 1.

  • Page 38: A Adobe Pcl4 Emulation

Adobe PCL4 Emulation The Adobe emulation of the Printer Control Language (PCL4) on the DEClaser 1152 printer differs from the Hewlett-Packard implementation, in the following ways: • The Line Printer font does not exist, and uses the Courier font instead. Both fonts are fixed-pitch fonts and only minor differences will appear in the document.
