Gearcase Overhaul

Disassembly:
1. Remove gearcase as described in Section 5.4
Gearcase - Removal.
2. Remove trowel assembly as described in Section
4.2 Spider - Disassembly.
3. Remove four M8 screws
(16, 29)

4. Remove drain plug from gearcase. Drain oil from
gearcase and dispose of oil properly.
5. Remove four M8 screws

6. Turn cover so tabs are open. Using two screw-
drivers, pry gearcase cover off gearcase. Remove
cover carefully.

7. Remove O-ring
O-ring and shims. Replace if worn or damaged.
8. Lift drive shaft assembly from gearcase. Inspect
gears and bearings, replace as necessary.
9. Tap left side of input shaft using a plastic mallet
until right gearbox side cover
10. Remove side cover, O-ring
input shaft assembly.
11. Remove left gearbox side cover

12. Inspect all O-rings, seals and shims. Replace as
necessary.
13. Inspect all gears and bearings for wear or damage.
Replace as necessary.
Note: The race bearings supporting the input shaft are a
matched set and must both be replaced at the same time.

Assembly:
1. Grease O-rings (11, 21) and shaft seals (17, 24)
with anti-seize compound. Install in gearbox side
covers. Secure shaft seals with retaining rings.
2. Install input shaft assembly. Replace cover using
original shims (31). If shims were damaged or worn,
replace with the equivalent type and number of
shims. Reinstall M8 screws (5) and tighten to 16
ft.lbs. (22Nm).
CAUTION:
Rotate shaft by hand while tightening cover.
If shaft begins to bind before cover is tight, DO NOT
continue tightening or bearings may be damaged.
Remove cover and install additional shims before
proceeding. DO NOT overshim or shaft play will become
excessive, resulting in an early failure.
CAUTION:
Check side play by placing an indicator near
the end of the shaft. Side play should not exceed .001/
.002. If these limits cannot be met without binding shaft,
check bearings for damage. Maximum allowable torque
on shaft when installed must not exceed
3 in.lbs.
3. Reinstall output shaft assembly into gearcase.
Rotate drive shaft until worm gear set meshes.
Replace cover using original shims (18). If shims
were damaged or worn, replace with the equivalent
type and number of shims. Reinstall M8 screws (26)
and tighten to 16 ft.lbs. (22 Nm).
CAUTION:
Rotate shaft by hand while tightening cover.
If shaft begins to bind before cover is tight, DO NOT
continue tightening or bearings may be damaged. Re-
move cover and install additional shims before proceed-
ing. DO NOT overshim or shaft play will become
excessive, resulting in an early failure.
CAUTION:
Check side play by placing an indicator near
the end of the shaft. Side play should not exceed .001/
.002. If these limits cannot be met without binding shaft,
check bearings for damage. Maximum allowable torque
on shaft when installed must not exceed
3 in.lbs.
4. One at a time, remove M8 screws (5, 26) from
both covers and apply Loctite 243 or equivalent.
Reinstall M8 screw and tighten to 16 ft.lbs. (22 Nm).
5. Fill gearcase with 45 oz. (1350 ml) of
Mobil SHC 634 synthetic oil. Oil should be visible
in sight glass. USE ONLY RECOMMENDED
GEARCASE OIL.
