PROCEDURE 12
Excelerator XLT 2000 Twenty-seven (27) Speed
Cassette (FIGURE 3)
To shift gears, you MUST turn the crank forward with the
chain under some tension while the bike is moving. DO
NOT attempt to shift gears while bike is stationary. Shift-

ing the chain towards the centerline of the handcycle is

for climbing/accelerating and is called a downshift. Mov-

ing the chain out or away from the centerline of the
R
handcycle is for speed and is called an upshift.

1. Perform one (1) of the following:

A. UPSHIFT - Press the shifter handle DOWN and

release. Repeat until the desired gear is obtained.
O
B. DOWNSHIFT - Press the brake handle DOWN
N
and release. Repeat until the desired gear is ob-
tained.
NOTE: The Left shifter handle operates the top de-
railleur and the Right shifter handle operates the bot-
tom derailleur.

BACKING-UP
Use the rear wheels (i. e. like a manual wheelchair) to
backup. When backing up keep the front wheel straight.

BRAKING

Reversing Drum Brakes - Seven (7) Speed ONLY
Use the brakes intermittently on your Excelerator cycle to
bring it to a complete stop. Apply by pedaling in reverse.
Hand Brakes - Twenty-Four (24) and Twenty-
Seven (27) Speed ONLY (FIGURE 4)
1. Squeeze brake handle(s) as needed to slow or
come to a complete stop.
2. Release when desired speed is acheived.

PARKING BRAKE

WARNING
Before attempting to transfer IN or OUT of the
Excelerator, every precaution should be taken
to reduce the gap distance. Position the Excel-
erator on level ground and as close as possible
to the object you are transferring INTO or OUT of.
The parking brake of the Excelerator MUST be en-
gaged and the object you are transferring INTO
or OUT of MUST also be secured before attempt-
ing any transfer.
To engage the parking brake, squeeze the handle and
push the stop button IN until the handle locks in place.
To disengage the parking brake, release the handle.
