Thermostat
The wax type thermostat is located in a housing at the front of the
cylinder head. When the thermostat is in the closed position, water
flow is restricted within the engine to speed warming up. Coolant
returning through the bypass hose returns directly to the water pump.
When the thermostat is open full flow takes place through the engine
and radiator.
To remove
1.
Drain the cooling system as previously described and
remove the top hose
2.
Unscrew the three bolts from the thermostat housing and
remove with lock washers. Lift off the thermostat housing
and remove the thermostat (Section F)
Testing the thermostat
If it is suspected that the thermostat is malfunctioning it can be tested
in the following manner.
Suspend the thermostat in water in a suitable container, gradually
heating the water. Check the temperature of the water frequently
with a thermometer. Do not allow the thermostat or the thermometer
to touch the container as this will lead to an incorrect reading.
