Advanced FE/E1 Fiber Converters
3. Voice and Data Network Configuration
The basic building blocks of a E1 network are the CSU/DSU, Multiplexer and a
Switch/Router.
The CSU/DSU (channel service unit/data service unit) is the actual connection point
for the E1 wires. It provides line diagnostics and keep-alive functions for the line.
The Multiplexer provides the network to direct multiple channels of voice or data onto a
E1 line. Many Multiplexers have built-in CSU/DSU units for direct connection to the E1
lines
The Switch/Router provides the interface, which permits internal servers and networks
to deploy the E1 line as an interconnection or network extension.
Typically E1 media conversion is deployed in two types of network applications:
1. Private network: where the customer operates all of the E1 equipment (example:
between two buildings interconnected by means of E1 media converters) for
Data Network applications
2. E1 Voice and Data Network Applications
