Line Differential Protection and Control
RED615
Product version: 1.1

1. Description

RED615, member of ABB's 615 product
series, is a phase-segregated two-end line
differential protection and control IED (intel-
ligent electronic device) designed for util-
ity and industrial power systems, including
looped and meshed distribution networks
with or without decentralized power genera-
tion. Re-engineered from the ground up, the
615 series has been guided by the IEC 61850
standard for communication and interoper-
ability of substation automation equipment.
The IED provides unit type main protec-
tion for overhead lines and cable feeders in
distribution networks. The IED also features
current-based protection functions for remote
back-up for down-stream protection IEDs
and local back-up for the line differential
main protection.

Issued: October 008
Revision: A / 0 October 008
The IED is adapted for the protection of
overhead line and cable feeders in isolated
neutral, resistance earthed, compensated
(impedance earthed) and solidly earthed
networks. Once the IED has been given the
application-specific settings, it can directly be
put into service.
The IED supports the new IEC 61850 sub-
station automation standard including hori-
zontal GOOSE communication as well as the
well-established industry-standard Modbus
protocol.
