Glossary- 2
Luminance
The signal that represents brightness, or the amount of light in the picture.
This is the only signal required for black and white pictures, and for color
systems it is obtained as a weighted sum (Y = 0.3R + 0.59G + 0.11B) of the
R, G, and B signals.
Modulated
Implies that chrominance information is present in a television signal. (For
example, a modulated ramp has subcarrier on each step.)
Modulation
A process which allows information to be moved around in the frequency
domain in order to facilitate transmission or frequency-domain multiplexing.
R- -Y
One of the color difference signals used in the NTSC and PAL systems,
obtained by subtracting luminance (Y) from the red camera signal (R).
SCPI
Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments. A standard that
provides guidelines for remote programming of instruments. These
guidelines provide a consistent programming environment for instrument
control and data transfer.
Signal Set
An arbitrary group of signals.
Temporal
Of or relating to time, as distinguished from space.
Termination
The impedance at the end of a transmission line that that matches the
impedance of the source and of the line itself. Signal amplitude errors and
reflections will result if appropriate termination is not applied. Since video is
a 75 Ω system, a 75 Ω terminator must be placed at the end of the signal
path.
Y
Abbreviation for luminance.
Zone Plate Signal
A signal composed of vertical and/or horizontal patterns that may be
dynamic (temporally changing or swept in frequency). Used for testing
complex processing technologies.
