DISK. FORMAT
DISK. FORMAT
DESCRIPTION:
Formats a hard disk cartridge or hard disk fixed platter,
initializes the disk allocation map and utilization statistics in
the superblock, and
~stablishes
the directory file.

Description
Determines whether or not the disk is to
be formatted as a disk from which to read
the file system program into the
controller.
Such.disks are referred to as
system disks and contain the 'BOOTSTRAP'
file and a pointer to that file within the
superblock.
If the "S" option is given in
order to format a system disk, the file
"BOOTSTRAP" is copied from the master
device.
This file implements the file
system, and is read into memory when the
controller is initialized.
The drive number of the drive containing
the disk to be formatted; specified as
"drive." If the drive is not specified,
the system issues the following prompt:
DRIVE:
Valid response: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7.
Up to 100 characters, not including a
carriage return character, are written
into the disk identification field in the
superblock on the disk.
The file system
uses this field to verify that allocation
maps in memory are for the disk being
accessed.
If no value is specified for
this option, the system issues the
following prompt:
