Installing GBICs

You can install or replace a GBIC in an operating Passport 1424T switch without
turning off power to the switch.
To install a GBIC:

Remove the GBIC from its protective packaging.

Insert the GBIC into the bay on the GBIC module
GBICs are keyed to prevent improper insertion. If the GBIC resists pressure,
do not force it. Remove it, turn it over, and reinsert it.
When doing so, ensure that:
— the GBIC is properly aligned with the slot, and that the GBIC's rear
— the two slots in the GBIC connector that guide the fiber optic cable

Caution: Electrostatic discharge can damage hardware. Review the
antistatic precautions on
Danger: Fiber optic equipment can emit laser or infrared light that can
injure your eyes. Never look into an optical fiber or connector port.
Always assume that fiber optic cables are connected to a light source.
